So I rarely every pay attention to them, to be honest.

But today I just detailed my car and the only thing that sticks out is the dull/black/rusting? exhaust tips.

The outside layer looks like aluminum (alloy?) and really isn't that bad. The inside, however, looks like steel and is blackened with carbon and rust.

I tried to use some ultimate polish and it helped a bit, but still very black.

I'm tempted to use steel wool or some fine sandpaper.

Opions? Advice?

Thanks.

If it was me I would use p21s polishing soap then with the foam from the polish soap I would use that and 0000 steel wool to remove as much sut and blackness then after that use a metal polish or either a combo like meguiars m105 and m205

I've always had good luck with mothers mag and aluminum polish.

I've used BlueMagic Metal Polish for many years.
It doesn't take much plus very little effort to get the job done.
Over the counter, I've yet to find anything better for the past years.

+1

Not the best picture but these were done with mothers mag & aluminum polish. Was able to remove the built up soot inside with little effort.

I also used mothers mag and aluminum polish with 0000 steel wool and got the tips on my FX clean and bright. Removed the carbon on the rolled edge quite easily.

Ok. Here is my submission of what works on NASTY exhaust. P21S Multi Surface Polish - which is my more aggressive than the polishing soap. But, you need to polish it via machine to get killer results, if they are nasty.

What I did was use a Wheel Woolie and a drill. The wool from the Wheel Woolie and the P21S MSR works very well to polish away pretty much anything.

This is the results. This exhaust is 6yrs old with 40k + miles on it:

I just did mine today (and the rears of the mufflers) . I used Ultimate Compound with 0000 steel wool. They came out looking pretty good.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll try it out tomorrow!

As soon as i read the title to this thread your post was the first thing that popped in my head lol. Had you not posted this i was going to look for it and send the OP the link haha.

+1 on P21S polishing soap and Multi-Surface Finish Restorer. Clean my tips up the other week using the “P21S metal twins” and some 0000 steel wool on the tougher spots. Then applied BLACKFIRE Wet Diamond Metal Acrylic Sealant to only one of the tips as a durability/ ease of clean up test.

Still need to get a small wheel woolie so I can try and replicate Swanic’s impressive results.

:iagree:

Toothpaste and mayo! Lol!
Sounds about right. He'll probably come in and say no ketchup or something.
I'd be: "standing here beside myself"...(~Ben Jabituya from Short Circuit)...
if I thought someone would be accusing me of using products, to clean/polish vehicles' exhaust components, that exhibit non-Newtonian flow properties!!:eek:
