Good morning.

I just purchased a used MB E500 4matic (Black/Tan) and would like to clean the tan carpets but have never had an auto with a tan interior. Can anyone give a new guy some help in which products to use to spot clean some dirt spots and clean the overall carpets and tan leather seats.

Thanks in Advance

David

Folex works well on any colored carpet, including tan. It's available at Lowe's or Home Depot. If you'll be buying from AG, I'd suggest Poorboy's World All Purpose Cleaner & Degreaser. It's the most effective cleaner I have purchased from online vendors and I've tried many.

Dave,

Thanks for the information. I will go get some today and post the photos tomorrow.

Have a great weekend!

You're welcome. Here's my process. Spray dark stains on the heavy side, then mist the rest of the carpet with the Folex and scrub it in well with a semi stiff scrub brush such as an interior brush from WalMart. Next I vacuum as much of the soap and dirt I can from the carpet with a strong Shop Vac. Lastly, I spray water over the carpet with a trigger sprayer and follow right behind it with the Shop Vac to extract both the dirt and the detergent/water from the carpet. This last step is really important because if you don't rinse the detergent from the carpet fibers, the carpet will attract and absorb dirt and soil like a dirt magnet.

You'll read over and over that proper car care is 90% process 10% product. Prep is key. I find both to be very true.

I like using Meguiar's APC+. Usually 10:1. It does what I need it to. As Dave mentioned the Poorboys product I know you can get them in smaller samples so if you don't like it you aren't stuck with a lot of it. I wish Meguiar's would do that.

Thanks Guys.. Is Lexol good to use on a leather interior?

While Lexol is designed for cleaning leather interiors I was pretty disappointed with it's performance on really dirty leather interiors. It is however a safe consumer product for cleaning leather interiors. Woolite diluted 10:1 works just as well if not better and is cheaper too and can be mixed a little stronger for dirtier interiors. A soft (1/2" thick) artist's paint brush is a great tool for working the dirt out of the wear lines in tan leather seats. Again, process over product plays well in leather interior cleaning.

I don't like lexol. You need to remember OTC products need to be "consumer proof". Cleaning ability was very low. Also the smell was Nasty.

I use Lexol and like it, but I don't do this for a living, that is, I haven't had the really nasty things some people have had. What works and what doesn't may depend on your area.

+1 on Folex. Haven't found anything better for stains on carpet. Lexol I used in the past but don't really care for it. I may have become a detailing snob but I haven't found any significant number of OTC products that can touch the cleaning or protecting ability of the products sold by AG.

Hmmm, ill have to pick up some folex. Havent tried it before but it never hurts to have more brands on hand. FWIW ive used CG's Fabric Clean for the past 6 months with no issues.

I have had great success using optimum power clean dilluted 3:1.

I have not tried my carpets yet. But what I do for my floor mats is I vacuum the loose stuff first, saturate it with water from the hose, spray the opc and using a stiff brush to really scrub, spray it off completely and suck the water out with my shop vac.
