Hey guys, I've read that people use isopropyl alcohol to clean the oily residue on the inside of their windshield. To me that doesn't really make sense because oil doesn't not mix "too well" with alcohol vs something like lacquer thinner. However, I'm not sure if using lacquer thinner on the inside of the windshield is ok and if the smell is going to persist. Any ideas?

I wouldn't use laquer thinner.

I'd first try some glass cleaner (automotive glass cleaner usually contains IPA), if that isn't cutting the "vinyl fog" or nicotine that is frequently found on the inside of windows, try an APC. Or as a last resort something like this: Duragloss Nu-Glass (NG) #755, glass polish, water spot remover Just put some towels down on the dash in case you get any drips or splatter.

use a dry micro fiber towel first. you will be surprised the film that comes off. next use the magic eraser, third use your glass cleaner of choice .. hope that helps :)

Something tells me you've been watching ChrisFix videos

Magic eraser on glass. Interesting. Haven't tried that.

Any videos of this in action?

Pinnacle Black Label Surface Cleansing Polish best glass cleaner ever. Works great, just lightly polish it on the windshield and let it dry for bout 20 mins and it wipes right off. Taking all the smears and haze off. Inside glass (non-tinted) and exterior glass and it works wonders.

Clean with stoners terry cloth first then again with micro,it's more of a light film come to think about it.Like a car that's been stored for years film.

I've had good luck with this by doing an initial wipe with a DRY terry cloth or mf towel. Followed by a dedicated glass cleaner. There are products made for the purpose of keeping that "fog" at bay, and they really do work well.

Magic eraser on glass, Chrisfix sure comes up with some "off the beaten path" ideas that work.

Apparently the plastic dash emits oil vapor when boiling from the heat of the sun that lands on the surface of the windshield

Actually, when it come to new cars it's not just the dash it's a lot of the interior because so much of new cars the interior is some type of plastic material.

When the interior is hot all the plastic, vinyl and other man-made materials outgas and the byproduct of this outgassing is called

Vinyl Fog

Which is an oily residue you see on inside glass.

Now follow me on this....

Do think this vinyl fog only shows up on the glass? Or is it possible you only SEE it on the glass but it's actually building up on all the interior surfaces?

:)

corvette are a big promblem, the material out gases so much that a black interior turns to a chalky white which is impossible in some cases to remove.

I have found it's no so much the window cleaner as it is the towel you use. I bought some Chemical Guys waffle weave towels and my glass is clear now. I was always the first to admit that windows weren't my best thing before but now I have no trouble with them.
