Not really a detailing question, but I figured you guys would be able to answer my question. I had my hood repainted because someone decided to make very large dents in my hood.

Is this clear coat failure? I know the bottom mark is an area where there's no paint at all because it's only clearcoating there. It's the white marks that have me worried. I have a 1 year guarantee so I can get them to repaint the hood if I want.

Hard to tell from the picture you supplied. Looks like a scratch to me, can you catch the area that your worried about with your finger nail? Did you just get the hood/ area painted?

Need more info to know.

Jordan.

Yup, the entire hood was replaced and repainted.

My finger doesn't catch on it. What would cause that kind of scratch mark? It actually feels pretty smooth.

I'll be polishing and waxing my whole car soon, but if the clear coat is failing, I don't want to waste my effort on the car if they will repaint it anyways.

How long ago was it painted? It's possible that the marks are beneath the CC.

It was painted maybe 7-8 months ago?

I don't remember seeing those marks when I first picked up the car. I imagine if they were below the clear I should have seen them right away (though I did pick up at night).

I'll have to pick up some scratch-x. I'm a little confused why that would ever happen though since I park right next to my complex away from any balls (no courts anywhere nearby and about 2 ft away from a wall). Then again... I was surprised to see two massive dents in my hood the first time as well.

Thanks for the tips.

So I went out and took a look at it again, paul_g is correct. It was a glancing scratch of some sort.

I got some Scratch-X to work the scratch. Since I'm going to be using M205 on the whole car before I apply DG105 and C845, is there really a need to apply the Scratch-X still?

If so, should I do it by hand or machine? It's such a small area that my GG6 seems like complete overkill.

Also, regarding that missing paint (only clear) in the pic, do I need to worry about the paint failing there prematurely because of no paint underneath the clearcoat? Or is it not going to be a problem.

While I recognize there's a defect, it doesn't really bother me enough to not have my car for a couple days to get it repainted.

Applied the Scratch X2.0, took about 15 seconds for the marks to disappear :)

Thanks guys!
