I'm working on a Chevy Silverado with a dime sized section of the clear coat chipped off on the side of the bed. A check of the entire vehicle showed no other clear coat issues. It appears that something may have hit this area and caused a piece of the clear coat to come off.

I thought I would do the following:

1. Polish the area to smooth the edges slightly.
2. Apply 5-6 THIN coats of clearcoat touch up to build the area back up over a span of 2-3 weeks to allow ample drying time.
3. Lightly polish.
4. Glaze
5. Seal
6. Wax

Any thoughts or a better plan would be welcomed.

Here is a step by step of a keying scratch that was done by richy. It's very detailed and should help you.

I'm not sure that polishing the chip is a good idea you may end up removing more of the clear coat around it. Once you apply your clear coat you will have to sand it down to level it out with the rest of the surrounding clear. That's all explained in that how to I linked

I have never done wet sanding before so I am reluctant to try it before I get some practice in. What if I layer the clearcoat and then use a fine polish to level it out?

Or should I just use a sealant to cover the area and minimize it?

Well you can do the clear coat and try to get it level as possible so that you don't have to sand it down. Polish will not be able to level the clear coat down.

Tape off the surrounding paint so you only polish your touch up paint, after a few days. That way, you only mess up that area if you do. If so, just reapply the touch up paint.
Sand it to 2500 and then polish the spot to get the worst out by hand. Then use a machine to polish the area.
