Coatings...how many available today?

There are no standards that coating manufacturers have to comply with, so it's a free for all out there.

Its up to us the consumer to make sense of this mess, evaluate, and inform each other. The cream will eventually rise to the top, and the others will be forced to get better as a result.

Forums like this are increasingly becoming more important because this hobby/industry comes with a steep cost of admission.

forums are a double-edged sword. while customer feedback and objective reviews are definitely worth something, sometimes people value the wrong things as they relate to product efficacy or perceive things without knowing what they are actually seeing. so much subjective nonsense to sort through on the boards!

another thing to consider is what companies back up their claims and marketing...and which don't.

i am sure that a company like OPT, run by a well-known polymer chemist, has material backup to validate their claims, such as industry-standard test results, etc.

it's my personal feeling that the bar has been set by one particular coating but due to lack of marketing fluff from them, there is room for a lot of other entrants in the market to make noise and get attention.

one other thing: the people on the forums love to play with this stuff because it's their hobby. i treat this more like if i was doing it professionally, meaning, if something works to such a degree that i see zero flaws, i'll stick with it. if not, i'll continue my search but only then will i spend the time, effort and money. i won't keep seeking a peek at the other side to see if the grass is greener, haha.

•There is, again, the matter of marketing.

-Not everything that is sold as a coating is actually a coating.
