Compounding Question

I need to add a heavy cut compound to my line up like Menz power gloss or Meg's #105. Is there a general rule of thumb when not to use a compound in fear of removing too much clear coat or maybe the clear coat is thin already. I do not have a paint meter. I have a 98 cobra to do next weekend and the paint needs some work so I will need something with some bit but I dont want to remove too much.

Call some detailers in your area and see if anyone has a paint meter.
