Are you asking what type of light to use for looking at paint defects?

Halogen is a double edge sword.
Great in the winter... but sucks in the summer.

Get a brooded lamp with a clamp and a par20 LED with 500 lumens or better, with a light spectrum/appearance of 5000°K or higher. As good at swirl finding as halogen or incadecent bulbs but without even a quarter of the heat and power usage, about 15 times life expectancy, and way more durable for mobile/heavy duty use.

A brinkmann xenon or other handheld light is also a must have IMO

It was Larry from AMMO I believe that said after one waxes his car you should, hit with a Brinkman light to see if you missed any spots.

Which I found out it was true, I went to go put gas yesterday and under their MH lights or Metal Halide Lights, I noticed a spot I missed. HID lights work good for finding swirls, (they are the orange street lights a combination of both replicate the sun colors)

(Don't ask me how I know all this info) 0:) lol

The dang Brinkman is still out of stock!

No problem. Fluorescent lights in the 5000°K spectrum work well for area/ambient light and are cheaper than LEDs. However, LED floods are great for both area lighting and spotlighting. Mercury vapor, metal/sulfur halide (street/warehouse lighting) are gonna put out more accurate color appearance/light spectrum however they are overkill for the average garage ceiling height, and require more expensive ballast/fixtures. Halogen and Xenon are the next best choice to cover the accurate light temperature/color/appearance and have enough lumens to work under, but cost more to power and are very warm to work near. That said, obtain one of each type of light stated and you can see what works best for your average work area/conditions. Never hurts to have ample/extra light sources. Plus, certain lights/spectrums work best with certain paint colours to show defects and surface clarity. Have fun, and don't forget your shades looking at all these lights. B•)
