So I got me the 300 gallon cr spotless water system. I've used it about 3-4 times only using to spray the water off after the washing/rinsing process. I noticed this last time it was showing 90 ppms. ###? Is it normal to have to replace the media after 3 uses? IF so, I just wasted $200 on this thing because I can't afford $100 to refill everytime. And that was only because I won it at a silent auction.

This is not normal. Here are some possible causes:

1) Perhaps the resin inside the canisters were old when you got it

2) or you may have extremely hard water, but even then you should get more washes

3) or it sat too long without being used

Did you use it the entire wash? It should be just used for a final rinse. If you used it the entire wash process - 4 washes sounds about right. If not something isn't right. I'm assuming you read the directions and set it up correctly? What is the TDS of the water going in?

Also, are you using the supplied nozzle and on the proper setting?

On your system you should be getting approximately 300 gallons of DI water if the total dissolved solids (TDS) in the water going in the system is around 200 ppm. If your water's TDS is less than 200 ppm, then you'll get more than 300 gallons of DI water. If your water's TDS is more than 200 ppm, then you'll get less than 300 gallons of DI water.

What is the shelf-life of an unused canister?

Why would the unit sitting for a period of time exhaust the media?

Are you using it with the flow restrictor supplied ? The water need to be in contact with the resin for a good flow time to be effective. If it flows out too quickly the filter may not work effectively.

What was the tds you got from the start ? Did you get 0 ? You should unless you are filtering brackish or well water. If you are not getting 0 the first time around chances are the resin was used or you are letting the water flow out too quickly.

Do you know you could recharge the resin ? People who like reefing regularly use di resins and one of them by name david saunders actually wrote an article about it. You need to be comfortable working with hazardous chemicals though

This is from the CR Spotless FAQs page:

Will the resin go bad if I don't use it?
Yes it is possible. After long periods of non-use there is a possibility that algae can form and foul the resin. If it is going to set for a long period of time with out use (60-90 days) we suggest that you remove the resin cartridges, allow them to drip dry and dry the inside of the blue housings to prevent algae growth.

The cartridges are opaque, of you unscrew one and give it the sniff test will you be able to detect algae?

I have changed the resin on mine only one time. The main thing you look for is the reading on the TDS meter. I changed mine out when it began reading 20. I think that's the time to change the resin. I did notice sort of an algae or musty smell from the water coming out of the unit at that time.

When I took the cartridge out you could see, from looking outside of the opaque canister, about half the resin in the canisters had a dark color. Which I think was from the TDS being absorbed by the resin. I didn't notice any algae on the resin when I emptied out the cartridge/canister.
