I know this is a detailing forum, but I'm posting this in "Off Topic", because its off topic. I'm posting this because it almost caused me to crap my pants last night and it seems like there is a decent amount of Mac users here, along with a general interest in computers.

Besides being obsessed with detailing (just look at my post count), I'm also obsessed with The Second World War. Last night I was sitting in bed reading "The Axxman Conspiracy", a non fiction book about the historical events at the end of WWII in Germany.

Book:

So, obviously the book contains info about Artur Axmann. When I read all historical books, I always Google Image the names of the people involved just to get an idea of what they look like for my own curiosity. Last night I Googled "Artur Axmann" and started looking through Google Images of pictures of him.

I clicked on one photo to enlarge it, and all of a sudden some crazy screen came up "from the FBI" saying I was guilty of child pornography or copyright law infringement. The URL started with "FBI" and it looked quite official. My screen was locked.

These are not my screen shots, but it looked something like this:

At first I thought "this is crazy", and just went to close out of Safari. I'm using an IMac 21" that's about 2 years old - the base model. All the software is up to date. It wouldn't let me close the screen. No matter what I did, I couldn't close that tab or Safari - or, get off that screen.

The webpage instructed me to go to a major retailer and send something called a "money pack" for $300 to unlock my computer.

I consider myself semi-computer savvy. I can do what I need and want to do, if I can't do something I want to do I can usually figure it out.

At first, this really freaked me out. It was accusing me of viewing "child pornography" which is just insane. But, it did say something about copyright infringement as well. It sounds nuts, but for a few minutes it threw me off and I got that creepy feeling in my stomach.

But, then I quickly realized, if you were doing what the webpage was accusing you of, $300 was not getting you out of it.

However, I was luckily able to switch to another open tab and "Google" the terms "FBI lock screen". I found out this is a completely bogus Mac virus (and they said Mac's can't get a virus) and it's easily removed.

If this were to happen to anyone else (apparently its quite common), all you have to do is reset Safari and check all the boxes to "reset" - and everything is back to normal.

Just an FYI to Mac users.

It's a virus, I've seen it more and more this year at work ( I work as a computer tech).

Unfortunately people fall for it quite often and send them the money, only to have nothing change on their computer. And yeah, don't listen to anyone who says that Macs can't get viruses, they don't know what they are talking about.

I don't like Mac's but I do like the iPhone :D

I don't get caught up with, this is a detailing forum, blah, blah, blah...
If someone wants to talk about Green Eggs and Ham then sure why not? There probably is a green eggs and ham forum somewhere out there haha

Back to being off topic: lol

When that happens, (like you said) you should close everything and start from the beginning, heck even go as far as turning off your computer, but never type any personal information, or even keep it saved somewhere on you computer.

That's what they are trying to do, get your information and steal it.

Good for you that you caught it

That's cool, I am going to school for computers too. I am looking into Cyber Security

Macs do get viruses, just not as many as the other OS. The more popular a Mac becomes, the more prevalent viruses will be. Anyone who thinks Macs are impervious to virus attacks is asking for trouble.

Sophos has a free Antivirus tool for Macs. Go to their home page, scroll down to the very bottom, click free tools.

I have never gotten virus on my MBP...
But i have plenty on windows operated lol

I like using the MBP, but there are crap load i dont know about with the Mac OS. But when comparing the speed with a windows, the MBP hands down is the winner.
Windows is just so slow, i assume it is becasue of their OS. I am not a computer person.... so my knowledge is limited

I custom built my PC. I just built it for home entertainment purposes. HTPC.

My brother built his PC for gaming, so he is running Intel Processors, mine are just AMD. So his is built for fast processing. I have mine connected to my 40" Flat Screen with 5.1 surround sound lol

So I don't necessarily agree with Mac's being faster. It's just depends what you are running.

I do however have a friend who actually repairs CPU's and he took a mac book pro apart to repair it and he was really impressed by the high quality of the equipment used.

So as to a lot of things, it all varies. Any computer can catch a virus. It just depends on what you are doing with it, to catch that virus ;)

I'm glad it worked out for you. If that happened to me I would have panicked, thinking I was having a Pete Townshend moment. Like you, I would have breathed a sigh of relief as soon as they asked for money.

I think they would be kicking in your door instead of giving you advance warning

FWIW I would have probably made a mess of my pants too had I'd seen that on my screen

I'm just really impressed with Apple in general. I don't do anything to complicated with my iMac. I used to have Windows computers. They always froze and had junk software I couldn't figure out how to remove.

Even if a comparable Mac is 2x the $ of its Windows counterpart I'll pay it every time. I don't care. I have the Apple Time Capsule, iMac 21", and iPhone 5. It all works seamlessly together without fail.

Another thing is with my Windows computer it was always a toss up if/when something would print. I went through 3 different brands of printers and it would never work 100%. I always had to reboot and unplug and reset stuff to get it to print. Also, that was a hard wired printer setup. The Mac is WiFi and it just works.

My mom has a Sony laptop. It's really confusing to figure out certain things. It seems like you have to manually check for updates for the computer itself, for Windows, and for the programs. It could be some setting, who knows? Mac just tells you when there is an update for anything.

This virus is super old been around for a long time not only on mac but on windows. Linux is the only way to go Ubuntu for all

I tried ubuntu but went back to windows,

If I feel my CPU is getting finicky I just do a windows system restore back to factory settings.
