I know this is a detailing forum, but I'm posting this in "Off Topic", because its off topic. I'm posting this because it almost caused me to crap my pants last night and it seems like there is a decent amount of Mac users here, along with a general interest in computers.
Besides being obsessed with detailing (just look at my post count), I'm also obsessed with The Second World War. Last night I was sitting in bed reading "The Axxman Conspiracy", a non fiction book about the historical events at the end of WWII in Germany.
Book:
So, obviously the book contains info about Artur Axmann. When I read all historical books, I always Google Image the names of the people involved just to get an idea of what they look like for my own curiosity. Last night I Googled "Artur Axmann" and started looking through Google Images of pictures of him.
I clicked on one photo to enlarge it, and all of a sudden some crazy screen came up "from the FBI" saying I was guilty of child pornography or copyright law infringement. The URL started with "FBI" and it looked quite official. My screen was locked.
These are not my screen shots, but it looked something like this:
At first I thought "this is crazy", and just went to close out of Safari. I'm using an IMac 21" that's about 2 years old - the base model. All the software is up to date. It wouldn't let me close the screen. No matter what I did, I couldn't close that tab or Safari - or, get off that screen.
The webpage instructed me to go to a major retailer and send something called a "money pack" for $300 to unlock my computer.
I consider myself semi-computer savvy. I can do what I need and want to do, if I can't do something I want to do I can usually figure it out.
At first, this really freaked me out. It was accusing me of viewing "child pornography" which is just insane. But, it did say something about copyright infringement as well. It sounds nuts, but for a few minutes it threw me off and I got that creepy feeling in my stomach.
But, then I quickly realized, if you were doing what the webpage was accusing you of, $300 was not getting you out of it.
However, I was luckily able to switch to another open tab and "Google" the terms "FBI lock screen". I found out this is a completely bogus Mac virus (and they said Mac's can't get a virus) and it's easily removed.
If this were to happen to anyone else (apparently its quite common), all you have to do is reset Safari and check all the boxes to "reset" - and everything is back to normal.
Just an FYI to Mac users.
