Dawn Dish Soap washing?? good or bad

Title says it all hahah. I wanted to wash my car, but i wanted tons of lubrication in my soap if i did. Would Dawn Dish Soap ruined my cars paint. I heard that a long time ago but i think i may have just heard it from the wrong person. I have a really hard clear coat if that helps out lol
 
I would only use Dawn as the first step to get a car ready for the claybar. I would also assume that you will be doing a full polish and protect on the paint as well.

Ohhh yes!! Full deal! Now what would you say if it were just the wash by itself. Is that not a good idea?
 
I dont see the need for Dawn in car care period !!!

Dawn is highly alkaline and can work against the rubber surrounds and weatherstripping over time with extended use and long sit times. While Dawn might remove "all" previous layers of a wax (can anyone prove it) it has not been shown to remove "all" layers of a paint sealant.

If you are polishing any vehicle you are abrading the surface. This motion will remove any old waxes, sealants , or contamiments anyways.

Clay is designed to be used with a well lubricated soap or quick detailer type product, and using dishwashing soap will likely damage or break down the clay bar quicker. Use the manufacturer directions for best use.

So in car care, using a car wash specific or PH balanced to its job is still the best advice.
 
Even the Dawn website says that their product is not recommended for washing cars.

Question and Tips

Can I use Dawn to clean things other than dishes?
Dawn is so effective in cutting grease on dishes that over the years, consumers have used Dawn on other greasy messes around their homes, from cleaning kitchen messes like grease build up on the stove range hood to oily spots in the garage. Dawn is not recommended for window cleaning, car washing, body wash or washing hair.

On a personal note, I do recommend Dawn for washing dishes. It's great! :cheers:

Which is why I stopped using Dawn a few years back. Nice post.:iagree:
 
hahahah well thank you guys very much. Luckily i had never tried it on my vehicle, but its good to know all that info. Preciate it fella's
 
dawn will kill the clay bar... ive tried it for use as a clay lube to acclerate the wax removal... i was young and stupid, and short a clay bar...

i find the alcohol wipe to be better at ensuring all the lsp os gone, and it leaves imho a cleaner surface to begin polishing... and then ill alcohol wipe after each step... leave the dawn in the kitchen
 
Do a search for "Dawn" over at the Autopia site. There must be a zillion threads discussing it. Controversial and much discussed subject. :)
 
As Scott said it won't do anything to the paint, it can affect rubber seals, weatherstripping, plastic etc. And I did a test once to see just how strong it would be on paint, I used some dawn and washed one area twice that had Natty's Blue. Didn't do anything, area still beaded like before. So its not going to really strip anything.

Stick with a good wash, and qd'er/clay.
 
I was always told that Dawn would remove all the wax of a car. I never tried it. Never will. Has anyone used the new low pressure wash by Meg's? This is fairly new!
 
I know a local high end detailer who uses Dawn and also clays the cars using it. He's mainly a Zaino guy and does great work.

But, for me, I clay then use a paint cleaner or polish and IPA wipe down. I have tried it and as was mentioned earlier, I'm not sure it did remove all the LSP, plus even the manufacturer says it is not for car washing.

Zaino offered this a 1st step originally but even Sal has offered over the years that other products exist that can remove waxes and polishing does it anyways. Remember when he first offered Dawn, he did not have an AIO or Paint Polish in the line.
 
A fellow over on Autopia took the time to research this and looked at the MSD's on Dawn vs "dedicated" car washes - guess what, same stuff. I read some clown on the Beemer Forum say Dawn would remove clear coat - what a bunch of horse squeeze!

Now - as it's been pointed out, Dawn doesn't recommend you using on your car, why? Ever hear the one about a trial lawyer sueing a company because some idiot used Prep H as tooth paste and puked, yeah, companies have to CYA you know.

Me - it's cheap, and on cars I'm going to polish anyway, I'll grab the Dawn everytime and save the expensive car wash for my maintenance customers. Actually, with the economy in the toilet, I may have bought my last gallon of "car wash"....

I don't think you can accurately compare two products simply by looking at their MSD's...
 
I have used the Dawn (original blue bottle only) approach per Sal and would not suggest doing this all of the time. None of his fellow followers ever complained about issues with the Dawn approach. He then recommened to use Zaino wash after applying the wax.
 
Really? I think you can. Here's another tidbit to chew on, all that expensive leather cleaner out there, can be replaced with a 10:1 mix of Woolite and water.

Short story about Dawn and my doctor. My oldest daughter is going through those teen years and got my oily skin and the acne that results. My family doctor told us to mix a little Dawn and mouthwash in a bottle with water - about 1:1:1 ratio and use that on her acne as a wash before showering, it worked! He said Dawn was safe enough that the tree-huggers cleaned ducks after that last oil spill.

But hey, buy the most expensive stuff you can it makes you happy, I couldn't care less.

I'm curious, what brand of mouthwash did he recommend?

One thing to note, Dawn is used to clean crude oil off of animals that are affected by an oil spill, but I doubt that it is widely used or recommended to clean animals in the absence of an oil spill. Drastic times call for drastic measures.
