We have really hard terrible water. I have been using this unit to pre-soak and then to rinse.
I wash with the hot water from the house since it is soft (in a bucket). I wash once a week since May.

My question is about recharging. I have the original bag of tablets. I will probably be recharging soon.

My question specifically is are these just regular salt tablets ? Or do I have to buy these specific tablets every time I want to recharge the salt water filter ?

Or is there any other method to recharge the filter ?

I don't even bother recharging the cartridge. For a few bucks more you can pick up another bag of resin and simply replace it. This is better than trying to recharge the existing (used) resin in the cartridge.

Water Softener Resin Refill

There is a member on here that actually can recharge his water filtration system.
He made his own and uses separate resins, not mixed resins like ours have.
One resin is cation and the other is anion. They actually can be renewed to 98% like new.
But they do require caustic chemicals to do so. That is what big industrial user do.
It is not safe or cost effective for us.

What does make a difference is to run a mixed resin pre filter like I do.
Just a small inline filter to knock back the worst of the measurable dissolved solids before they can degrade the big expensive to refill filters. I replace the small filter's resin about every other wash. The amount of resin is very small. But it keeps my big filters like new for over a year's worth of washes.

To keep an eye on how depleted the small filter has become I got a TDS (total dissolved solids) meter mounted between the small filter and my bigger filters. I replace it's resin when the TDS starts to read above 25. This really helps to extend the life of the bigger filters.

Here is the meter that was described in the post I mentioned earlier.

What kind of small inline filter do you use ? I would like to look into it.

Also can I use regular soft water filter salt tablets to recharge the soft water filter with my system ?

I toss my softener cartridge in the brine tank of the home softening unit overnight after each use. Certainly not the best practice, but it works.

You know I was wondering if that was possible the other day. So I guess it works. That is very convenient.

Here is where I got the small filter.

I prefer the clear on half way down the page #GH 102
And I use the Water Softening Cartridge #FC 024

And this is what they have to say about using salt to regenerate the resins.

I have tried their exact method and had spotting in less than two washes. I didn't feel it was worth the effort. But maybe it's the terrible water I get. I actually have small gravel in my pipes.
