Hello,

I am thinking of adventuring into Boat Detailing, have been detailing cars/ceramic coating for the past few years. Any 101 on how to detail a boat? i have a friend who has a boat. Going to start with his.

I understand this:
Bottom of the boat doesn't need ceramic coated, only water line and above?
Dont mess with Gel coat
There are specific products to clean hull as it needs harsh chemicals (some call it acid wash)

Best to dive into the archives of all the mike phillips how to articles. Also check out his forum, themikephillipsforum.com

None of the regular active memebers here do boats that i know of.

Invest in a rotary polisher along with 3" & 6" sanding disks.
Gel coat is a lot more forgiving than a cars clear coat.
Having said that when you get to the edges lighten up on the pressure that you are applying.

If your going to specialize in boats you might as well ad airplanes and rv's

Do you live in a coastal area?

No need to go there.
That guy wont help you unless there's a dollar bill attached to your question
If you take his course, be ready for him to take full credit for any success you might have

I dont know you from adam. Our experiences clearly have differed, and i dont know your story.

As for myself, all i can say is i never met the guy, taken his classes nor have i given that guy a penny, but he has helped me tremendously. Either by his past written articles/videos or more current information. I have said this many times in the past but when i started out i would not have progressed as quickly/ learned as much as i have without all the information mike phillips has put out FREE to me.

I would be lying if i said that other members on here have not contributed in the general scope if detailing and which products, how to's etc. But in terms of anything paint correction, it was mike phillips.

To be clear, i do not take everything he says or does as the word. I have my own mind and own opinions. For example, while i have tried 2 of the dr beasleys abrasives they just were not for me and my style.

A brief history:
Mike and I joined this forum around the same time.
I admit i busted his balls a bit in the beginning, but it got to where i felt sorry for the guy.
I extended a olive branch on several occasions only to have him break it in half and try and beat me with it.
Like a dog, I will only take abuse for so long then I'm coming for you

If I hung up my wash mit today he could never achieve the experience that I have in:

a) actual hands on experience in dealing with every aspect of automotive detailing (not just show cars) Imaginable
b) running a detailing business successfully for over 40 years as a primary source of income

Know this.
If he wasn't being paid, he would have never helped you (imo).....

You got me curious. I wanted to see if I could find a thread showing mp's true colors.
Turns out the 1st one I clicked on was a prime example
This poor bastard practically begged mp to help him with his van. Was even willing to drive halfway across the country.
MP's response? "Sorry bud. Your not good enough for me to touch your stupid van".

What a self absorbed knob.

Poor bastard,
If you read this and still need help drive to memphis and I will take care of that for you.
If you'll help, I won't charge you a dime.

The offer stands @LostInTransit.
I didn't mean anything personally by calling you a bastard. Hopefully you understand my point

Interesting. I was not around here then so i have no idea of what it was like here.

What i will say about if he was not getting paid then he would not have helped me, well you might be right. Ill never know. The only thing i know is, im on here and from time to time i share my experences of products, sometimes help others with questions if i feel im capable to do so, also i give my opinons, sometimes maybe i shouldnt but because well im opinonated at times. More so as i get older. Its a work in progress.

So with all that being said, i do all those things and i dont recieve a penny. Why do i do it one might wonder? Because im giving back to a place that helped me so many times i lost track. Knowledge ive gained without paying for a class somewhere. Maybe one day even if years later it helps 1 person, then my free time typing it out was worth it.
