Detailing shop Standards

Hello Mike, and everyone

I would like to ask do we have an standars list for detailing shop, just like in others industry such as:
restaurant they have from 1 to 3 Michelline Star or in Hotel and Resort they have from 1 to 5 star.

In my country, detailing is kinda booming right now, many carwash shops, detailing shops open everyday. But they just build their shop by looking each other with no rule to follow.

I tried to build my shop following these criterias:
- source of water : try to achieve TDS (total dissolved solids) less than 20 ppm
- source of light : about 5000 lux for detailing bay
- environment: mostly closed to reduce dust. Using aircon to achieve 20-25 C (68-77 F), Humidity ~ 60%. As my country is tropical, its really hot and humid. Outside temp is about 86-96 F. Humidity ~ >90%

I believed there are many more but I dont lnow yet.

So my question is Do we have thess standards or should we build one?

I'm not Mike, but here's what I think...
1st of all I commend you for your dedication, those rules you listed so far can be important, but I can't help but think they're near that fine line where they could wind up on a list that's simply too strict even by detailers standards. Yes it's important to work clean, but having the doors shut at all times may be a bit depressing if it's a "at all times, no exceptions" type of rule... Water quality? I don't know much about source of water but as long as you install the proper setup, it should be all fine right?

I guess what I'm trying to say is while it's great to have a high standard of quality and pride that goes into your shoppe to distinguish you from the rest, you don't want to make the standards so crazy that the crew around you begins to wonder if it's gone overboard and unnecessarily strict with the rules just for the sake of folllwing rules..

Follow best practices, trust in your knowledge so far, and always know that you never stop learning new things, and that will allow you to implement good ideas whenever they're good for your business, instead of having a list of laws that are written in stone since the beginning. Your work ethic appears to be solid based on you asking this question. I think that will help you more than you know..

I understand why it's easy to have so much on your mind.. As detailers we tend to overthink certain things [especially when it comes to preparation] because we try to force ourselves to live up to "perfect" standards and don't see failure as an option no matter what. It's not easy, trust me, I think we all know how it feels to put such high expectations on ourselves while doing this duty where "perfection" is not too much to ask for..

Just remember that quality costs, and as per any other industry in a competitive market exceeding the customer expectations at the minim cost (not price) will ensure you are able to maximise your profit and increase market share....

Raising your operating costs is only present if you can charge for it.... And it's your chromed that will decide that not you....

Thank you Mike and everyone Have you seen 80 percent of restaurants disgusting.why are all pizza shops mostly disgusting.I feel like asking the manager why is this place so dirty.The 2 franchise restaurants who care about cleaning and standards are Olive Garden and Ruth Chris steakhouse.So getting back on topic,do as you feel nothing is better than being clean and organized.I own a hair salon and that place is immaculate and the clients always make a comment on how clean the place is.Everytime there is a smudge on the glass during operation hours the assistant has to clean it throughout the day.Ive gone to autogeek for over 5 years now,and Bob McKee and Mike Phillips run a tight ship over there.mike Phillips makes sure that nothing is out of place.In all of his cabinets everything is top notch folded and organized that place is unbelievable.

Being clean and organized = customers.Through out the many years of my detailing career there is always that motto of a dark and dingy garage filfty towels on the floor grime of compound on the walls etc.you have to have that gene in you for organization and keeping things clean and in working order.Every Sunday my van gets washed and all bottles are in the right spot.So when I'm on the job I keep the side door open and people see that and means a lot.

No set standards in this industry.

The best thing is only use someone who's work you have seen and who has also been recommended.

Pretty much all my work these days is referrals from other customers.

Also pays to keep your garage/van clean and tidy, presents a good image.
