I'm just curious- with all the great car soaps and shampoos, is Dawn really necessary for when you want to completely remove everything from a finish? It seems like it's overkill to me - especially if you are going to clay or nanoskin the car.

Thoughts?

Oh no, not another Dawn thread :)

There are certainly many good prep products that could be used other than Dawn. There is also a growing consensus that Dawn doesn't really remove LSP's, that it simply coats them with surfactant residue that kills the beading.

It also depends on what you are trying to accomplish, yes theoretically clay or clay substitute should degrade/remove the LSP, but if you are going to polish it's definitely going to be gone.

I searched and there were a plethora of threads that came up but I didn't find the ones asking this question directly. I'm sure it's out there but I don't have the patience to read every thread lol

Thanks for the reply- that's kinda what I was thinking. I used to use dish soap all the time (years ago) but now I try to keep kitchen/household products away from the car lol

SWEET - thanks for the links! All the shampoos etc I have now are CG. I've been looking to expand my inventory but didn't know what to get.

Use a product designed for what the need is ..... are you removing old wax ?? Are you cleaning paint ??? While kitchen products might be similar, they are not all the same. Its best to use something designed for the task at hand ....

ValuGard has a decon/neutralizing system called: "ABC".

I often just use the "C"-component (Detail Wash) of
the above system for regular ol' car-washing sessions.

I would actually recommend that one over the Finish Kare simply because everything you use with the Step 1 will stink of petroleum for days after, even the bucket.

I use CG Citrus Wash & Gloss in a higher concentrate and have been very happy with the results.

Hey, lets not forget Griots Garage Paint Prep.

I personally uses 1 or 2 oz chemical guys citrus wash and clean to 1oz of water to strip the paint of its lsp, thought if your on a budget it's better to use rubbing alcohol or apc after you have clayed the paint to ensure all lsp is gone....as for dish soap well that will always have a place someplace on the bottom of our selves

+1 - I have started with a wash of CG Citrus red, foam with CG Honeydew snow foam to nano skin mitt, then GG paint prep as final step before rinse. There is virtually nothing left on my paint.

I think Dawn works great......... If you are trying to remove pizza, steak sauce, catsup, or macaroni and cheese from your paint. Otherwise I think I would just stick with the traditional car wash soaps. :).

An Ode to Dawn and all of its P&G cousins.

• ~30-40 (or more) years ago I didn’t know about the health and environmental problems associated with the chemicals in your bottle.
-But now, with the gains made in the last ~30-40 years of science and improved technology, I know that it’s possible to make a dishwashing soap that won’t harm our health, the children's health, and the environment. {Note: Some folks will include vehicles in this "harm arena"}

-Yet it’s not illegal for you to contain toxic chemicals...
thanks to the outdated Toxics Substances Control Act.

•I guess what I’m saying, Dawn (et al), is that
I've grown up and taken responsibility.

-It’s high time you did too.
