I have a few hundred bucks I'm going to dump into advertising and printing of a few products. I came across a site that sells those yard signs. You know the ones you jam in the ground at intersections and hope for a ton of exposure before someone yanks them up.

My question is has anyone done that before? Does it work? Can you get in trouble for it?

While I have not used these before as such, I do have experience with them.

Question: Does it work?

I would have to say it does depending on area, and potential customers you are trying to obtain. Some might see it as "trashy" while another might see it with value. It's hard to say in most cases.

Question: Can you get in trouble for it?

YES. In most cities they are referred as, "Bandit Signs". They can fall under any sign/advertisement law the city might have. If caught, (rarely happens in most cases), you will be fined and responsible for removal and or clean up.

This may not be the case for every city, keep in mind.

Ah see that's what I was looking for. Who is it that comes and picks them up?

No problem. I can say if you are going to place out any signs, check with the city on what they have in place first. Our city will allow them, however, you have to pay a small fee. I beleive it's $35.00 for so many signs, and they will issue you a "sticker" for each sign. When you are done with your adverstivment or after "X" amount of time, you pick them up and return all the stickers for a refused of "X" that goes towards your Public Works bill.

The "Bandit Route", are usually picked up by city workers, whom usually try to call the number listed to kindly ask you to remove your signs. If you look around your area, you might see some that are roughly 10-12 foot up on telephone poles or simular poles? This is the bandit getting "smart" since most city workers do not carry a ladder.

I offer the "Bandit Route" only so you know how the city looks at them, espicially if you advertise in the same city you work in. Could draw you some unwannted attention.

I've never used them, and never would, so this is just an opnion, not based on facts.... IMO I wouldn't waste the money on them. Usually no one ever comes to pick the signs up, but they still get knocked over, and blown all over the place, and make the area look cheap and crappy. I even usually make a mental note to NOT use the companies on these signs because they don't even care enough to come clean up the mess their signs have made. On top of that, I have never seen a worthwile company use ground signs to advertise, usually if the company is worth going to they use other forms of advertising. Again that is just my personal opnion.

I personally don't like it when people place fliers under my windshield wipers, not sure if you were looking at having fliers printed.

As for signs, I would avoid plastering your city or work area with signs.

Here's an option that you would only use where you were working, the benefit is anyone really interested has the option to stop and "talk" to you while your on sight.

When you're done, take the sign with you. Clean and professional.

That was my next option mike. A banner on my vehicle or work area. Good idea about the sign.

Where I live those signs would be considered littering. I could not even put a Garage Sale sign in the tree lawn of a vacant home at the corner of my street without the cops removing it. In my opinion, this is not the way I would go about advertising.
