Hey, I was asked this earlier and wasn't sure of the answer. When getting your car detailed, do you tip the detailer?

For detailers, do you get/expect tips after a detail? What's the norm?

Thanks!

If so, how much? This person is having the vehicle UK'ed.

I will say that we set prices without expectations of getting a tip, but do welcome it!

As far as I am concerned, a tip is for the "above and beyond". If it is just "average" then the actual cost is enough to make that point (pick you game up), and if it is "mediocre" then the lack of return business will be payment enough.

Tips are at the discretion of the customer. I've received plenty $5 tips off of maintenance washes and one $400 gratuity off of a coating (just because the fellow was that thrilled about the results). You should not set a tip table... that is my opinion!

A tip means the customer thought the work provided was better than what they're paying for IMO. I've been tipped here and there especially for last minute and tight deadline jobs.

I would NEVER expect a tip but would be VERY appreciative of it though! I'd take that tip and buy a product I use on a regular basis, like glass cleaner or mf towels for doing the GD method for instance, right back into the business IMO!

Some people tip, some dont. When people ask I tell them that I never expect it but do appreciate it.

I always tip myself after a detail. :D

I do accept tips and appreciate them. I however do not expect them.

I never expect a tip but some people do give them. I never look at the check or count the cash when the customer hands it to me. I figure I gave them a price and that's what we agreed upon. Anything above that will come depending on how much they like the outcome of the detail. JMHO.

It's not common practice in Australia to tip, but I've been lucky enough to be tipped a few times. In most cases it worked out to be ~10%

:whs: Most my customers tip something but I never expect it. If you use square there is a tip menu above the where they sign and most my customer use it.

How do you act when given a $20 tip lets say....?

"Thank you this is very generous"

Or what?

I routinely tip most people rendering a service. Usually about 15-20%. Kind of depends on the service and more importantly the quality. I've never had a professional detail my car. I have had professionals render service to my car and many times I'll seek out a mechanic and give him a $20 for "lunch on me type of thing".

I only detail part time mostly for friends or referrals and usually do something extra like an engine detail or an interior detail when only exterior was agreed upon. So I usually wind up receiving tips or gift cards.

I'm pretty notorious for detailing my wife's friends cars when they car pool and leave their car at our house. I remember fixing a keyed black Camaro for my wife's friend one time. Completely comp'ed it took me 2 days to fix and detail it. She cried when she got the car back. That was my payment .

My theory is what goes around comes around.

One thing I do is when receiving 'a service' (especially a small shop or such) is to NOT use a credit card, but just write a check.

This way the shop owner is not taking a hit from the card fees.

I only detail on the side for friends and referral business. That being said sometimes they toss me an extra 10 or 20, sometimes they don't. I never expect it and always let them know how much it's appreciated.

For example I had a friend and repeat customer of mine call me last minute for a wash/vac/window/spraywax on his black C6 corvette. I had previously done a 20hr correction on over a year ago. And since then I have done some other work on it. I took care of it in about 1hr-1.5hrs. Only charged him 20$ but he insisted on giving me 40 for my time. Just goes to show you that when you take care of them, they take care of you in the long run.
