Does it need to be fixed?

I have a PC 7424XP and when I went to change pads I noticed that the "nut" the backing plate screws into was somewhat loose. There was no excessive wobbling but compared to my original 7424 which has more years and hours of use it doesn't seem right.

is there a way to open the machine up and tighten it ? Can I go to a tool repair shop that deals with PC's ? Its 2 years old.

That sounds more like a shot bearing than something that needs to be tightened. The parts breakdown shows that as a "spindle and bearing assembly" but it does look like there might be a screw in the middle.

The last time this came up I thought the XP had a 3-year warranty, so see if there is a local service center by searching on this page: Porter-Cable ServiceNet

I'm guessing this is more of a bearing arrangement, but I don't know if it can be tightened. If it bothers you I would take it to the nearest service center.

Does this machine see heavy use?

I have used it maybe 15 times in the 2 years I have had it? Like I said my original 7424 has seem A LOT more use. I will check with my local repair facility. Thanks for the heads up on the bearing guys.

it would be cheaper to find just the bearing and have someone with a press press the old out and put the new in, i know after a while the bearing will "break in" and will move alot easier, i used to skateboard and it took a while for new bearings to break in and move really fast and not slow ect. if theres no side to side or up down play you should be good. you can always remove the black rubber seal on the bearing with a small pick (these bearings with a rubber seal are serviceable bearings.) and make sure bearing surfaces are fine.and most bearings you just take note of the number on the seal and can find replacements very easy. im guessing the bearing broke in. reason why i say it just broke in is because when a bearing fails it will squeel, wont turn easy, or be stuck/totally explode and everything falls out...i really doubt its broke if theres very very minor play (all bearings have a tiny amount of play)
