I'm thinking about having a professional brochure made about our mobile services. Then take these brochures door to door in the different communities. Has anyone found this type of marketing beneficial and did it generated a fair amount of business?

Thanks,
Greg

I recently did this in my Neighborhood. I have received 4 new clients so far and expect to get 1 or 2 more...(possibly more) In your own neighborhood I think it works great.. As far as different neighborhoods go I couldn't tell you.. just make sure you don't place them in mail boxes and maybe talk to one or two people in the neighborhood to make sure it's acceptable and not considered solicitation.. some neighborhoods have restrictions on these type of things.

I do think it could be somewhat beneficial.. Just don't go in with high expectations hope for a few new clients and remember that word of mouth is strong in this business so if you get even 1 new client they could be one of your best new resources for new business as they refer you to friends, fam etc...

Best of luck to you!!

let us know how it turns out for you

Thanks for your input. There's one community I'm looking at that are high-end homes, I know you have to get a permit from their PD to go door to door. Good point about trying a few homes and see how the people respond. I get some work from word of mouth, just not as much as I would like. My regular clients say they love my work and they will tell their friends, which some do, some don't. I guess it's that "Out of sight, out of mind" thing (I hope??). That why I'm looking at other ways to market my business.
Thank again for you reply!

No prob. Hope It nets you some new clients. Glad to see your taking a smart approach about it as well.

I know what you mean about the referrals to. I have one lady who loves my work.. I do all 3 of her cars.. She is always saying she is referring me... and I believe her but no business from it yet... I do believe this is error on my part for not putting business cards in her hand to pass out a few when she mentions my company..

1 more small piece of advice is that anyone that hires you for a job be sure to hand them about 3 cards they can pass along to friends as referrals.

I actually put 2 business cards in all my clients car plus a small table tent Thank You card asking for referrals. I'm updating my cards adding an idea from my son's dentist. They have on the back of their card "Referral Rewards Card" offering a $10.00 discount on future service. There's a place where you write your name, and when they present the card...well you know the rest.

I've had door hangers made up, and I get decent response from them. You can cover a lot of area in a short amount of time, and still can leave an impression if the homeowner is not home. Also, it avoids the "traveling salesman" look of actually knocking on the door.

Just have them professionally made, and make sure you hit the right neighborhoods.

Like the door hangers idea giving the ability to cover more homes in less time. Did you have a local print shop make the door hangers or did you find them online? Maybe I can hire some High School or College kids to help, and if someone has a questions, I could walk over to that house and the kids could continue on their way.
Thanks,

Flyers are certainly an affordable way to advertise (versus other types of media). Keep in mind though that they are time consuming and the return rate is likely down around 1%, but can be as good as 3%~4% in a specialized targeted market.

There is no specific result you'll get from flyers. It all depends on what you are marketing, who you're target market is, the neighborhood, where you are placing the ads, and even the design. Something like offering a 1-time 20% discount when showing the flyer. (just be wary of people that might copy them) Also a 'referral' discount, maybe $20~$25 of their NEXT detail (not the first one) when they give your card to a friend and write their name (and customer #) on the back. (Hey if it works for DirecTV it can work for you.) ;)

If you start placing flyers on car windshields at a supermarket, I doubt you'd get a good return. But if you targeted areas of business like law offices, real estate offices, high rise parking lots (where people drive nice cars but are too busy to detail them), and distributed your flyers there, the return should be greater. Plus of course high end neighborhoods. :)

Cost is one thing that helps as you can get typical 'letter sized' pages done (in color) for under 15¢. If you're printing your own, and have a laser printer (single color) that cost can be down around <7¢.

But first take a step back and look at where u just came to get answers for your question... the internet. ;)

Old school marketing tactics like flyers are not as effective as more targeted marketing but again, they'll work. Given their relatively low cost compared to other advertising mediums - I'd say go at it.

I'd say first get on search engines, the key is to have people that are looking for your services to be able to find you. It is the fastest growing commodity in the world. ;) Either do it yourself, or find someone that knows how to do if for you. (Barter perhaps as that's better than cash, ALWAYS!) :)

Don't even bother with yellow page ads and the like. No one goes to the yellow pages anymore, they go online. Learning to market online is a MUST for any business that plans on being successful in this day and age, weather u out source or learn the skills for yourself it is a must.

That being said, keep in mind that fliers, like direct-marketing, often yield better results with consistency. I used to pass them out as a kid with my Dad, so much so that I could tell the manufacturer of the mailbox before we even got to it!

Target an area and hit it once a month for several months in a row. Consistency is what ropes in a lot of people (you either happen to catch them when they need your service, or they feel that your consistency indicates some sort of stability or professionalism.) Just think back at how many you've had show up on your doorstep and which one's you've not even looked at or thrown straight in the trash. Remember the design is critical here, then the consistency shows the prospective customer that you are a stable presence in their area. It'd be a good idea to attach a business card as well!

One more thing, remember that the mailbox is the property of the US Postal Service and you cannot even touch it. You can *maybe* get away with taping a flyer to it, but it'd be better if you had a way to attach it to the post or the housing as a lot are brick these days. (The housing doesn't belong to the Postal Service, just the box itself.)

FWIW I have seem people that come after postman comes in a neighborhood and put their flyer inside. But that will likely get you a call from the local Postmaster and a stern warning! Better off if you take the time to put them on the peoples door. That shows a level of comittment that is much more than just driving by with a rock taped to a piece of paper and throwing it in their driveway. :)

I also put some business cards in my customers cars and a thank you note.

In my opinion any form of marketing works. If it didn't people would not use it.
From personal experience here are MY numbers. It takes about 1HR to distribute 100 flyers by yourself (or pay someone).
From those 100 flyers I got about 8-10 calls and from those 8-10 calls I got about 3 customers. The average sale was of about $70 so $210. I had 2000 door hangers printed for about $220. I still have 1000 door hangers left to distribute this week. So those are my numbers, in the first 100 door hangers they about paid for themselves. These numbers don't include referrals. The only thing is how time consuming it is. I am now considering Every door direct from the post office. A little more expensive, but faster and you still target the area you want.
P.S. Dont put any expiration date on them, unless you plan to pass the all out.

I hope it works for:) The only marketing I have ever done is a website and word of mouth and showing my work to people. The best thing I have ever done and its 100% free is go to car shows and car club get togethers. I have one club which gives me 50% of my income a year.

I ordered mine from here, I had the design custom made from logodesignguru.com, then bought the best, glossiest stock they had.

Paying someone to hang them is a good idea, but make sure it is someone trustworthy. Door hangers are a lot of work and required a lot of dedication to get the results you want.

Like it has been stated in this thread, print marketing campaigns WORK, but there are obviously more effective methods, if you have the money.

I got the design and the door hangers setting on my door step in a few weeks for around $400, which seems like a lot. But with 2500 door hangers if you get a 2% return, that is 50 details. How much money do you get for 50 details? If you only get $100 per detail that is almost a 10x return, but you have to spend the money and more importantly the time after the initial investment

If you have any questions, please let me know. We are ALL still working on our marketing techniques to some extent or the other, and as a community I think we benefit greatly from sharing effective and non effective tactics with each other.

I've tried flyers in the past (never put them on a car windshield because I never liked it when people did it to me). Also never put in or on the mailbox. I've done direct mailing which was a waste of money. I did a 3 month campaign with zero results.
Currently I focus on my website (which I built by educating myself. The hard part is getting external links), and working on improving search engine presence, I've had good results with Adwords to date. The only thing I haven't tried are the door hangers.
You bring up some good points to consider, thank you for your input!
