I picked up the DP Coating kit when it was on sale. So far I have used the Paint and Wheel Coating. My first application of the coating went OK but I feel I over applied the product. This was due to several factors...low light, white car, didn't use the DP Prep Polish, newb.
2013 Camaro ZL1
My second application I did the hood of my '05 Greystone Metallic Grand Prix. This time I used the Prep Polish and had much better lighting. I think the most important factor this time around was the lighting. The product flashes very fast so the bright lights really helped in seeing where the product was going.
The foam applicator does get a bit "grabby" when applying the product. To help alleviate this problem I held the pad with my 3 middle fingers on the back of the pad and my thumb and pinky were holding the edges on the front of the pad. If I didn't hold it that way it kept wanting to roll the edge over.
Process:
I compounded and polished my car with the Meg's DA Microfiber System a little less than a year ago. The paint is still in great condition with the exception of some hard water spots/etching down one side of the car. Stupid sprinklers...
General condition of the paint...
As you can see the paint is really in good condition. Especially for a daily driver that hasn't been polished in a little over 10 months. I polished out the hood with M205 on a flat white pad to get rid of the water spots/etching. I probably should have clayed, but I was anxious to try this stuff out!
Followed up by the DP Prep Polish also on a flat white pad.
Which was then followed up by the DP Paint Coating.
Some reflection and sun shots...
Pros:
Really easy to use under the right conditions and once you get the hang of it
Much less expensive compared to other coatings
Really slick feel
High gloss
Can be topped with a wax or sealant
Cons:
Very finicky in anything less than optimal conditions (IMO)
Flashes extremely fast
Didn't notice any ability to fill fine scratches/swirls (not a big deal to me)
Overall I think this is a user friendly product if you are using good technique and you are in optimum conditions. I was lucky both times I applied it that it was cool outside. I can see this stuff flashing even faster and using more product if it is hot outside. I also can not stress enough how much easier it was to work with the coating under bright work lights.
