Hi! I hope someone’s monitoring this thread, looks a long time dormant..!

I’m using a G9 and the Marine 31 Clear Vinyl Restorer & Protectant on clear vinyl with moderate to light scratches. We're evaluating this system against our old process of using a Cyclo with various scratch removers & polishes. What pad would you recommend for the G9 and the Marine 31 Restorer? So far we have used the Smart Pads orange foam light cutting pad that came with the G9 set. It has done a good job, just wanted to see if there's another recommendation.

And is it possible to buy Marine 31 Plastic Clear spray cans in case lots?

Not a thread - a "forum group". Sorry, I'm a "Word Guy".

What pad would you recommend for the G9 and the Marine 31 Restorer?

A foam "polishing" pad.

In the detailing world, you have,

Foam CUTTING pads
Foam POLISHING pads
Foam FINISHING pads

You want the one in the middle, in the sweet spot.

Not too aggressive in and of itself IT mars or scratches the plastic. And not to soft that it won't do anything.

So a foam polishing pad. My pick would be the Lake Country 5.5" white flat faced foam polishing pad and you'll need a 5" backing plate on the G9. If you have the 6" backing plate the 6.5" Lake Country white flat faced foam pad will work.

So far we have used the Smart Pads orange foam light cutting pad that came with the G9 set. It has done a good job, just wanted to see if there's another recommendation.

The pad I recommended is "like" that pad. The Griot's Orange foam formula is called a LIGHT CUTTING foam pad. It's like the LC "POLISHING" pad. So about the same.


Here's the deal - PLASTIC (as you know) IS SOFT.

So if the defects are deep you may have to start out with an aggressive foam pad and the RE-POLISH with a less aggressive polishing of finishing pad. This is because the sharpness of the pad itself, while it will remove swirls and scratches out of Eisenglass or clear, flexible plastic windows, this sharpness will leave it's OWN DEFECT called micro-marring.

The cure is simple, just re-polish with a less aggressive pad.

I have good luck with the Marine 31 plastic polish. I believe this formula was introduced back when Nick Rutter worked here. And DO shake it well before use.


When I REALLY want to get plastic clear - I've also had good luck with the products and pads shown in the below article BUT you should note - that combo is only for after the grunt work is done. It's a finishing step.


Polishing Plexiglas to be as clear as glass using Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish

I always recommend people READ the above article, the words are important. The pictures are purdy, but it's the info that is important.


And for what it's worth....

I've polished a LOT of plastic in my life.
