Im planning to deep clean the engine bay and undercarriage; based on my research; all i have to do is cover the filter or intake and alternator, i dont have to worry about the battery because mine is in the trunk. Then mist it with water from garden hose, spray some degreaser, brush it thoroughly, then rinse with water again.

For the undercarriage, all i need to do is use a long brush, and brush the undercarriage with car wash shampoo.

I have not done this before, but would like to learn and try it. Im just very concerned about the entire engine and its parts also the electronics getting wet.

I would like to get a second opinion from you on how safe this project is.

Project car is: 2008 bmw z4m coupe

Thank you in advance.

Great questions and thank you for taking this from e-mails to the forum!

What you listed above is a good general approach. I'd recommend getting a nice garden hose sprayer like the one I use for my detailing boot camp classes. It has a "Shower" setting that does a good job of rinsing without forcing water into things like electrical conections or flooding the engine bay with tons of water.

The sprayer is actually a very key component of working safely as it helps you to rinse safely when working on mondern hi-tech cars. Think I bought mine at Lowes or Home Depot.

Then read this article I wrote 5 years ago now... it's good sound advice...

How to use a Discussion Forum to Detail an Engine

As far as undercarriage detailing goes... that's just a pain without a lift. I own a lifted truck so for me it's actually easy. One of the reasons I own a lifted truck.

I would recommend avoid spraying any water on the top of the engines where the coil packs are or any high pressure spraying on any electrical connectors or components. Everything in an engine bay is designed to withstand some moisture and wetness, but not high pressure or direct soaking. So be careful. If the engine and engine compartment is really soiled, start kinda from the bottom up, this might help avoid targeting areas that dont need to be soaked with product or water.
