Well, after lurking about in this forum for over a year, I finally settled on a Griot’s DA polisher, 5” Lake Country flat pads, Wolfgang twins and Collinite 845. My first victim was my black 2007 Acura TL with what I would call moderate swirls. It took me probably 30 hours over a 4 week period to finish the car. Between the heat and my bad back it soon became obvious that the process was not going to be as quick and effortless as it appeared in the videos! My hat’s off to you guys who do this for a living.
I will say, however, I’m pretty happy with the results—it’s not 100% perfect, but close enough for a first attempt on a daily driver. Which brings me to the point of this post: I think it says a lot about this forum that a relative novice can achieve such great results on the first time out. Everything from product selection to proper technique I learned from this forum. So I guess it’s about time I said thanks to all those who regularly contribute. And Mike Phillips, if you’re reading this, I still have some of your posts from back in the Usenet days on rec.autos.misc (including “Polishing Paint by Hand”), so a special, long overdue thanks to you in particular.
Now about that hard clear coat on my ’95 Corvette…(more later).
