Hiya folks,

I’m starting again- didnt follow protocol first time round!

I’m a newbie to detailing but find it absolutely fascinating and am well hooked now, on the verge of becoming obsessed much to my fiancé annoyance. Looking forward to sponging as much knowledge as possible.

Paul.

Photos of the defects, hope they work!

I can relate to the annoyance. I get the same from my gf. Welcome!

Love the annoyance comment! My wife just rolls her eyes when I wash the car, something new comes in, etc! It is funny though that she loves my glass cleaner...aka my car sh!t!

Welcome to ago!

Yeah absolutely! It probably doesn’t help though when I tell her I’ll be 5 hours working on it....... 10 hours later and she’s not impressed at all 🤣

Welcome !!!!

My significant other does the same every time a package from Autogeek shows up. LOL

Oh I forgot, you’ll wash your car on Sunday which of course you’ll get the eye roll, THEN the car will get dusty or in my case yesterday had a super light rain/sprinkle just enough to raise the pollen/dust on the car and you do a quick rinseless wash when you get home!

Welcome to the rabbit hole!

Welcome!

My addiction is feeling the slippery surface when I grad the door handle.... knowing the rest of the car is the same!

Welcome to AGO, Paul! :)

Like Mike P said, those swirls look very minor. Do you own a machine polisher?

Hi Paul, yes I do. I own 2 DAs, one with 6 inch backing plate and the other with a 3 inch backing plate. I’m not sure what to do to take this to the next step. I moved this to the Auto detailing 101 forum, where Mike suggested that the issue could be that I’ve got soft paint. Problem is I don’t know what to do about it if soft paint IS indeed the issue.

Couple of questions:
1. what kind of car
2. What product did you/are you using
3. What pads are you using

I had a similar experience with my black Acura that has super soft paint when I used an inferior product with crappy abrasives.

With the help of Mike P and the rest of the forum, I used Blackfire One Step with LC white pads and it came out amazing...real amazing too!

Hi Jay, thanks for your reply....

It’s a 2011 Jaguar XJ (X351)

I compounded the paintwork with Meguiars DA compound and MF cutting disc to remove all the heavy defects.

Next I tried to refine he finish using Sonax perfect finish with Rupes yellow pads, also tried Chemical guys hex logic green polishing pads.

I also have Rupes white fine polishing pads but have not tried them yet.

While I’m writing this, I remember that the car has had a front end re-spray a couple of years ago.... would this then rule out the soft paint theory? The photos I posted were of the front wing.

Thanks,

Paul.
