Alright - have had 4 deodorization jobs in the past week and a half and the last one was a doozy! Enterprise called me to remove a fish odor from one of their cars..... a guy rented the car and left fish in the trunk for 2 days...... it was so bad that one of my guys had to wear a mask to keep from puking. I steamed the car 3 times..... and tossed an odor eliminator (fogging function) in the ride over night. This apparently did not work - calmed the odor down but was still a light rank smell in the ride. Any experience with this...... and if so had any success removing the smell?!?!?!

you might want to try our SoPure spray, its photocatalyst reaction with daylight
it should remove your smell.
just spray it all over the interior , close the windows for 10 min or so , let light heat the car and it will work, if its still smell, spray again..

You have to clean every surface, headliner, seats, carpets, plastics, dash, trunk & all surfaces inside the car, steam vents, and finally cabin filter. Its the only way to totally remove the smell. Kill it at the source and every thing else it can cling on to. Any kind of deodorizer just covers up the smell until it wears off.

That sounds like a pain!!!!
What about an ozone generator? I know we use these in the rooms at work when guests smoke in them, should help for the fish smell too I would think.

Method I would try, stick the ozone generator in the car, shut the car up as tight as possible (there will be a small gap somewhere to let the power cord out somewhere), then leave the ozone generator running overnight or maybe even for a couple of days.

:iagree: Ozone machine followed by tossing charcoal briqutes down by the spare tire

Yeah - tried it 3 times man..... had one of my guys behind me wiping so we could go faster..... steamed non stop till running out of steam.

Not a bad idea at all - what model were you guys using?!?!?! I just googled it and some seem very inexpensive..... but then again I have no idea what Im looking at, is yours affordable?!?!?!

Charcoal removes smell?!?!? Thats new to me - may have to give that a shot too. Thanx man.

I would say as others have, let an ozone generator run in that enclosed area for a few hours if you have access to one.

Yes, charcoal removes smell. Put like 3 lbs in open container (Pan) and leave it sit overnight. When storing a RV or car for long period of time it is a good idea to leave charcoal in there.

Dont have access to one right now - but sounds like this would be a great tool to have for future calls like this if it does indeed work. May call some rental places up today and inquire.

Thanx guys :dblthumb2:

Does it leave a different odor behind?!?!?

None,,Charcoal is used in kitchen filters, water filters,,
Not sure if it will get rid of the smell in one day but for the price it's worth a try. Use charcoal briquets they absorb better and also get rid of any moisture in the air.

Good to know.....

Ive seen tea bags and coffee used in aircraft lavatories - always still stinks like a porta jon though lol. Will definitely get a bag and test it out. Thanx again man.

I also heard that leaving either coffee (ground coffee) or baking soda in a bowl will filter out the smell. I've seen my mom do this in the fridge of our house one time and it worked pretty well. I've seen both coffee and baking powder be used. Not sure if it would work for a car but figured I'd suggest it.

I used to own my own deodorizing business. For something this severe an ozone generator is the way to go. DO follow all precautions. If the vehicle has rear seats that fold down then do so.

How is Ozone Harmful?

The same chemical properties that allow high concentrations of ozone to react with organic material outside the body give it the ability to react with similar organic material that makes up the body, and potentially cause harmful health consequences. When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs (see - "Ozone and Your Health" - www.epa.gov/airnow/brochure.html). Relatively low amounts can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and, throat irritation. Ozone may also worsen chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and compromise the ability of the body to fight respiratory infections. People vary widely in their susceptibility to ozone. Healthy people, as well as those with respiratory difficulty, can experience breathing problems when exposed to ozone. Exercise during exposure to ozone causes a greater amount of ozone to be inhaled, and increases the risk of harmful respiratory effects. Recovery from the harmful effects can occur following short-term exposure to low levels of ozone, but health effects may become more damaging and recovery less certain at higher levels or from longer exposures (US EPA, 1996a, 1996b).

I would try the charcoal method but add one step. Light the charcoal! I really dont have anything productive to add but wanted to be part of the thread. Keep us updated Anthony on what method works. We may run across similiar situations some day.

Spray the trunk liberally with extra strength formula Febreeze. I used this a few years ago to rid my freezer of strong fish odor after a power outage resulted in thawing of food in the freezer. I got the idea to use Febreeze from my brother who had used Febreeze to eliminate skunk odor from his car after hitting one. Since the fish was left in the trunk, it is probably a good idea to discard the floor mat in the trunk then spray all other surfaces in the trunk liberally with Febreeze.

I'm really glad I read through this thoroughly...wheeew!

One little note to add about using the charcoal. To help with odor absorbtion, break up the bricketts into small pieces. I've taken charcoal, broken up into little pieces, and placed them on a small cookie sheet and placed in cars. This has worked many times. Just close up the car and let it sit overnight if you can. Good luck..
