It's quite likely the rigid foam sold in the big box stores has been treated with a fire retardant especially if it's to be used in construction though I doubt anybody would treat packing peanuts the same way.

I take my packing peanuts to my local UPS store and they're glad to get them now especially with the Christmas rush approaching.

Foam board insulation is not for your attic. It is for concrete walls and under in floor heat systems. In the attic you want blow in fiberglass wool. It is the best product for the attic. Foam board will not burn, it will simply melt if exposed to a flame.

Foam board insulation is not for your attic. It is for concrete walls and under in floor heat systems.

And for exterior walls, which you have in your attic if you have knee walls exposed to an unheated attic.

Aren't the packing peanuts starch based anyway? I only ask because my dog partially ate one and it partially dissolved. Just stick it in the compost bin
