Gelcoat haze?

Hello everyone today i was polishing my toy hauler(gelcoat) it was fairly oxidized until i ran into a problem.

When i look into the sun i find there to be some hazy sports on the gelcoat (they can only be seen if i am looking towards the sun). If i look straight at the trailer it looks great and all i see is my reflection.

Also if i look at it at a angle it still looks shiny its only when i use the sun as a light that the sports appear. It kind of reminds me of rotary holograms that hide until you place the car in the sun.

For my approach i used the flex 3401 with a purple hybrid wool pad.

For a compound i used marine 31 heavy cut oxidation cleaner and found the haze.

I tried going over it with marine 31 final step polish see if that would help but no luck. I bought the marine31 (flex3401) kit that might put together to remove boat oxidation.I even read the entire book that was included to see if i would find the solution to my problem but no luck.

Sorry if i was a bit confusing its sorta hard to describe.

Sounds like your not removing the haze that was first caused by the heavy compound. In other words the final step polish isnt abrasive enough. I have recently switched from the Gloss restorer (which is a heavier cut than final step) to the captains one step and it made a huge difference for me on my customers boats.

With the captains one step compound I prefer the Rupes Blue coarse pad. I was using the LC CCS orange and yellow but it also left it hazy.

captains compound, one step boat compound polish, compound for black boat
Rupes 180 mm (7 inch) Blue Coarse Foam Pad

Do you first polish with a wool pad to remove the heavy oxidation and then follow up with the corse foam pad ? Or just start off with the foam pad i was under the impression that foam pads arnt good to use on the gelcoat because they will gum up easlily?

I always start with the least aggressive method possible. But a lot of the time I can look at gel coat and see if it's going to need a wool or not. But yes I do follow with the foam. After a 2 sections (2x2) clean on the fly then do two more. I roll through about 6 pads then put them on my rotary and use a pad washer

There are some sections that are very very dull and then they are spots that are not so bad. Do you think i will run into a problem using the blue rupes corse pad on my flex 3401 as far as finish?

I think the problem you are decribing is called highs and lows. It's caused by not polishing in a uniform pattern such as pressure or dirty pads.Hard to give advice with those pics.menzerna makes awesome products for gelcoat.I would repolish it again using clean pads and take your time.

My guess is one application, that is one machine application using Marine 31 Captain's Compound will completely clear up the finish. The abrasive technology used in the Marine 31 oxidation cleaner, gel-coat color restorer and final poish is as good as what's on the market but the abrasive technology used in the Captain's One-Step Compound & Polish is top shelf stuff.

That's why you can get these kinds of results for both the compounding and the polishing step from the same product.

Here's John with the top cap after the sanding, compounding and polishing steps... at this time there is no wax on the gel-coat.

Send me a PM with your shipping address and I'll send you a quart to test out and see if it gets the finish results to where you want them to be....

Maybe the best gesture I've seen on any kind of forum!

Update- I am sorry for the late update but hopeful this will help others in the future.i have been really busy with being on the road working but i finally got a chance to show you how awesome this product works. Marine 31's one step is far beyond better than Marine 31 heavy cut cleaner followed by their one step polish. I would recommend you spend the extra cash and get the one step polish and tons of time. There was no need to follow up with a final step polish. No one wants to do a 2 step job on such a big rv or boat. Here are some photos i took of my trailer. Thank you so much mike for sending me some free product to try. Autogeek has truly some of the best customer service around!!!:dblthumb2:
