i'm just getting my feet wet with this whole detailing thing and i wanted your opinions on my first correction attempt. All polishing done on Lake Country CCS pads.
My process was wash, clay, M83/orange X2, M80/white, zymol cleaner wax/blue.
while i was able to rid the CC of 90% of swirls/defects i still feel like there is a haze to the CC (see pics where light is reflecting). i keep seeing all these posts on here where people have their halogens shining and the reflection is crystal clear (you can see the details in the halogen lights thats how good they are) Am i being too critical, or are you seeing the same thing in the pictures that i am? I hope the pics work, otherwise this post is worthless. Side note: capturing defects/swirls in paint is still very hard for me, sorry for the poor quality of the pics.
Feed back please

Isnt XMT 1 similar to Megs 80 as far as aggressiveness? Do you think i should just try M80 on a blue pad? Thanks Navo

haha idk why i said XMT #1... haha

yes, try Meg's M80 on blue and see if that give you a crisp reflection

Agreed, it looks like you need to go blue to get rid of the haze. I had the same issue as well, first time I used my Porter Cable. Don't stop until you get all the haze out otherwise it will haunt you forever.

Very nice work so far though. It made a HUGE difference in the 50/50 picture.

ID agree with the above...the clarifty is there, but the finish needs to be burnashed with a little pad or maybe even a lighter polish

thanks for the comments. i guess i'll try a blue or black pad. Do you think i worked the white/M80 combo too long or not enough? I went approx 2 min or until it was slightly dusty in a 2X2 area. If M80 is giving this haze what should i step down to? Any recommendations to a megs product i could pick up at NAPA would be great! Thanks again.

i doubt the M80 is leaving the haze, most likely its the pad selection. if it is still hazing after the M80/blue, may need to pick up some Menz 106ff... but im almost certain the blue pad will clear it up.

It looks like you didn't work the 80 long enough for the diminishing abrasives to break down. That'll cause hazing.
I'd go to either M205 or 3M Ultrafina with a finishing pad and use the pyramid speed method.
Are you using a rotary or a PC?

I'm using a PC. Whats the pyramid speed method, sorry i'm new?

im new too but im pretty sure its

4 to spread
6 to polish
5 to burnish

correct me if im wrong

The pyramid speed method is for a rotary with a finishing polish: work at 900, go to 1100 then perhaps 1300, back to 1100, then finish at 900 rpms. That's the short version of the method. It's moot though, you're working with a PC.
Anyway, back to the M80 on your PC. It has diminishing abrasives and oils, so you have to work a small area at a time, say 2' by 2', work it enough for the abrasives to do their thing and then diminish, then your left with the oils to work in. Be patient, don't rush, and work a small test area first. When you find a system (product, pad, speed) that makes the small test area the way you want it, then you do the rest of the car, small sections at a time. But stay in your test area till you find a combination that works before you do the rest of the car.

Maybe I missed it but what kind of car are you working on? If the paint is really soft then as others have said it could be the pad that is leaving the marring or the polish is too abrasive. If the paint is hard then you need a medium polish to clean up the marring because the finishing polish is not abrasive enough to remove the compounding haze then follow that up with a final polish like Menz 106ff. I have never used Megs polishes other than the M105 so I'm not familiar with what you used sorry but those are 2 reasons why you can have haze after polishing

the car is a Pontiac G5. i don't know if its considered a soft or hard clear. thanks for everyone's input.

thanks for the link Rasky. it sounds like i might not even need the orange pad. maybe i will try M83/white and M80/black to see if i can get better clarity. I'm trying to hold back from purchasing more polishes/compounds as i just bought all my stuff less than a month ago. i know its only a matter of time before i get more stuff, i'm just trying to hold off as long as possible. this isnt a cheap hobby.:D

LOL! Yep, it's a definitely an addiction.

Good luck with the car and let us know how it turns out.
