I'm in the market for a fairly intricate home security system. Of course door and window sensors, but motion detection video surveillance and even iPhone compatibility would be preferred.

Just hoping for some real world, personal experiences and advice. Should I build it all custom? Or is there an all in one system that you've had good experience with? Video, computers, connectivity etc. is all right up my alley professionally, but no experience with this aspect.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Look into APX alarm systems. All is done via wireless including thermostats, smoke alarms, glass breakage alarms, etc. You can access all via the internet so this might have the features you need. You can also speak to the monitoring service through the main console if need be. With a distress code entered they can listen to what's going on and send the police silently.
Batteries are five year and a phone call gets them replaced when it's time at no charge. It also comes with key chain remotes. We are well pleased with ours. I don't know about the surveillance angle because we didn't check into that.

I have my system through GUardian protection. Its wireless, and does not use the phone lines. I can arm/disarm, view who has arm/disarmed it, and see my CC tv through an app on the iPhone. The control panel can be used for everything, but you can also log into a web page and add users, change codes and wot, and not have to worry about the 42 key presses and code to do those same actions.

I absolutely love it!

These look like the 2 buggers that took down my 6 pound papillon! What state you live in BigAl? It's a long story but amazingly she was fine...

Thanks for the suggestions so far, keep 'em coming. I've got the ball rolling in the right direction.

I do want a dog, but not for security purposes. Glad your dog came out of that one Corey!

Rat Terrier + Remington 870 slide action loaded with squirrell shot = Home Security :props:

get yourself 3 kids. none will brake in its to darn loud Im the MAN

This is our security system:

One of our three dogs, this is Betsy Boo, or as I like to call her, Ramboo. She would like to eat all the neighbors, their pets, and everybody who drives by. She's a crazy girl. :xyxthumbs:

we've had ADT in our last 4 homes. Very happy with them thus far. Don't have video surveillance so I can't comment on that aspect of it. We also have an english bulldog and a psychotic french bulldog. If the ADT signs on the lawn and the stickers on the windows don't deter the burglers, the sound of those 2 guys on the other side of the door will!

Big Al,
Those dogs are great looking. Your right just take those guys for a walk around the neighborhood. You should have no problem after that.

btw - those dogs aren't mine.. known for their reputation, nobody would want to mess with them even if they were friendly, who would want to take a risk?

I have an Alarm Force wireless alarm.

Basically, mine consists of a bunch of motion detector and door contacts (as I'm not convinced window contacts do any good). I also have smoke and CO monitoring.

My install cost about $500 because I added somethings like remote controls to arm/disarm, extra door contacts for garage doors etc...Monthly monitoring is about $30.

I *think* it is a good system, but how does one really know until it is really tested?
