Well, my dad's truck did. He went to a couple of stores today and didn't notice the damage til he got home. Some a-hole hit his truck right in the rear driver's side fender flare. Luckily it was only the fender which can be easily replaced.

At first glance, I thought it was paint transfer from the other vehicle, but it's not. Even though it's not exactly my car, I'm just so frustrated that people are senseless pricks and do stuff like this. At least man-up and leave a note or something.

My question is, what would you guys do in a situation like this? File insurance claim? Pay out of pocket for repair? I don't really know a whole lot about this type of stuff. Now on to the pics...

Live with it. But that could just be where I live talking....

Pay out of pocket. To repaint a fender is in the neighborhood of $500.
Most peoples insurance plans are $500 to $1000 deductible and insurance "may" go up from their.

Get an estimate, make sure you tell them that it is NOT insurance claim (price inflate)
If you try getting insurance to pay you probably have $500.00 deductible anyway.Once you file the claim it counts against you as if it was your fault since you were involved in a accident. Pay for it ,,forget insurance and move on!
My 2 cents

I'd probably pay for it out of pocket.

Something small like that seems easier to just pay for!

easy out of pocket. If I were you I would remove the flare from the truck and just bring it to the body shop. That way they do not charge you to take it off and put it back on. It shouldnt cost more then $200 and thats probably pushing it, I am just figuring they might need to put some filler or sand down if there are creases or anything on the fender flare

I feel ya. I got hit 2 months after buying my new car in a lot. Rear fender paint scrape no dent. I contacted my insurance they say unless you find out who did it, you pay the comprehensive (higher) deductible. I'm living with mine for now.

There is no reason not to go thru insurance, this is the same as vandalism to the insurance, it isnt your fault, and your rates wont go up. Also, when this happened to me a few years ago, i had a $500 deductable, but my deductable for hit and run or vandalism was ony $100

I would go through insurance just because i only have a 50$ comp deductible .... yes fifty... it only costs me like 10$ more a month to potentially save 450$ on my deductible. So as long as i use it once every 4 years im ahead of the game ... and ive used it 2x this year... call ur insurance company just to check

That's a comp claim and based upon your deductible should dictate what yuo would do. It should not affect your rates and often comp deductible are lowerer or waived, Check his policy. Basically same scenario as getting keyed.

This. Happened to me twice this year, both times in parking lots. Once with my car, once with my wife's.

Here's what you need to find out/do:

- call your insurance agent and find out if they cover damage like this under hit & run, vandalism, or comp or whatever. Note that different states have different ways/policies this is covered under - some it's comp, some it's vandalism, etc.

- find out if a claim filed under whatever way they cover it will impact your rates (mine didn't - hit & run).

- find out your deductible for that type of claim (if you don't already know it)

- get estimates from where the shop you want to do the work

Then, if the estimate is more than the deductible, you can decide whether to turn it in or not based on whether or not it impacts your rate.

I ended up turning mine in. Remember, some companies have deductibles that are total for the year, so even if it's not more than the deductible it may be worth submitting so that if something happens later this year (hint - wait til next year ;) you will have already met part or all of the deductible.

My old truck got hit on the tail light at work. Someone backed into it. Not sure who did it but it was probably someone I work with. At first I didn't notice but when I washed it I saw a scuff on the plastic step on the bumper and the taillight had condensation in it. Once I looked closer I saw it was broken. Replaced the light and I found the bed had a small kink you could only see when the tailgate was down.

Make sure it's only the flare and nothing else. If it was me I would just fix the flare and pay out of pocket.

I guess I'm not following the logic of paying for it out of pocket - isn't that why you have insurance?

once you make sure it doesn't impact your rate calculation (very seriously doubt it will, and they have to tell you if it will or not), even if it doesn't meet your deductible, turn it in so if something else happens you've already met part of your deductible (if you have annual deductibles, not per-incident).

My reasoning is that I don't want a claim showing on my file. My truck was vandalized several times at work in one year and if I had made those claims when it was actually broken into later I might have been given a hard time.

Ive never had this problem but some of my customers have been cancelled for too many claims. I don't know how many is too many but I don't want to find out either. If I can afford to pay for it out of pocket I will. My deductible is only $100 but that's not the point. Besides its a pain dealing with claims adjusters and time is money

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm guessing it will be paid for out of pocket, because it is just the fender flare after all.

Garry, I'll give you a call when I get off work around 6 or so.

At least the fender doesn't look like it has been dented. I would just replace the fender flare and polish the rest of the fender out.
