Griots DA and pads

I am very tempted to purchase the new 3rd gen Griots Garage DA. My old Meguairs G110 just died on me yesterday. I was thinking about the G110v2 but Griots has a lifetime warranty. My question regard pads. I recently purchased a couple megs pads. A polishing and finishing. The are the sift buff 2.0 7" pads. can I use these with the griots no problem or do I have to use a different backing plate? I may do the package deal from autogeek that comes with a few LC pads. It's more money but sounds like a good deal. However my soft buff pads are still nearly new and I want to still get some use out of them. I only used them on one vehicle and they are still good. Are the LC pads any better than the megs? Is another backing plate really neccesary? I am on a tight budget and don't want to spend money unless I need to.

On a different note I have read more positive than negative on the Griots model. I enjoyed my G110 and hoping the Griots is just as good if not better. I have been reading up on the G110v2 as well and sounds like there have been some issues. But it still sounds like a good product. If they offered a lifetime warranty and a price similar to the Griots I think I would go for it.

All the pads and backing plates are interchangeable between the Griots 6" and the Meg's GV110. That being said, sometimes Velcro from on the pads likes Velcro from the same manufacturers backing plate a little better. However, it will work.

Just wondering why your using 7" pads with a DA???
 
7" was what I was reccommended for the G110. Latley though I have been reading that the smaller the better. I have been reading some bad reviews on the CCS pads. Those are the pads that come with the griots 3rd gen kit. If I purchased the polisher buy itself for $139 what pads would you reccomend?
 
You can opt to get flat pads instead of the CCS ones :)

I like flat pads as they are the best performance, durability, ease of use, and cleaning for your dollar :)
 
I love my GG 6". I usually use 5.5 pads on it (w lc 5" backing plate) but i use 6.5 pads every once in awhile on hood, roof etc and it has more than enough power to run both of those sizes with ease. Never used a 7" pad though so you might need input from someone who has. I wouldn't expect it to be a problem though.
I have a first gen PC and 6.5 pads on that are almost unusable due the machine's lack of power.
 
Has anyone had experience with the Griots pads? The kit I ordered had the ccs pads. I'll be doing my first correction soon and not sure how many pads I need, or which compound or polish to use.

How do I opt to get the flat pads when ordering the package deal? Also I may try the orange griots garage pad. I have a new Meguairs finishing pad I can us for polish then I can try the griots pad to cut. I'm going to make a decision tonight so I can take advantage of the free shipping and gift.

You call them. If you email them tonight, you can say that's what you want and AG will honor the free shipping and gift tomorrow.

Or you can make the order, and just put it in the comments box that you would like flat pads instead of CCS. As long as the price is cheaper (ie the flats are cheaper than the CCS), I don't think there should be any issue.

AG's customer service is very good!

The Megs 7" pads work fine on the 6" backing plate. In fact, the GG6 will spin them a LOT better than the Megs buffer does.

The Megs pads many will say are better quality than the Lake Country units. They should be as they cost considerably more. (Unless you are buying LC pads one at a time.)

One reason you see a lot of talk about smaller pads (5½") is you get much better torque with a smaller pad on a free spinning DA. Better correction when the pad doesn't get bogged down. ;) Another reason, which is HUGE is the cost factor when buying 5½" pads. They are a TON less money than the 6½" ones. :D

CCS versus flats.... really that's up to you. Personally I like them both. Never had a problem with either finishing out well. One thing nice about the CCS is the straight edge. Helps work right up to the edge of side moldings, crevices and such. There is a need sometimes for a thicker pad, and others for a thinner one.

Should you get the 'package' with multiple pads? IMHO I'd say YES! In fact, I'd like to see AG offer a package with at least a dozen (if not two dozen) pads. With a 12 pack you could get 4 of two different buffing pads, then 2 of two different polishing pads. That way you'd AT LEAST have enough pads to do a complete car without worrying about overheating (and over using) the compounding pads, without having to clean and wait for pads to dry, and without stalling the start to finish process half way through.

Funny thing about moving to machine buffing and polishing.... it is SO MUCH FUN! Yet when done right.... the machine is the cheapest of all the parts involved. Having enough pads on hand will surely end up costing more than the machine did (even if you only have one car, much less 3, 4, or more). Then start adding up the cost for compounds, polishes, glazes, sealants and waxes and you'd be able to easily buy 2 GG6's (with money left over). Reminds me of drug dealers, give um' a sample for free and they'll come back for more, paying whatever you ask. :laughing: :eek:

I purchased the second gen gg6 a month ago. It came with five 6.5inch polishing pads and the 6 inch backing plate. I purchased the lc 5inch backing plate and 18 lc flats . 4 yellow, orange and white. Also 3 black and blue . So with the 5 it came with that's 23 pads . I have used it once so far just to test it out and it works great . I have experience with the megs da and porta cable . The gg has a lot of torque and the machine to go with .
