The moment you have all been waiting for. I did a test last week with the giveaway that of Griots Garage Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner & the Sonax Full Effect Wheel Cleaner I had purchased. Here I have ZERO biases, I will lay it down as I see it. Just be aware that I purchased 5L container of the sonax, and received the 35oz container of Griots, so the packaging section is not a fair match up.

My intentions of this review is to give you a view from a beginning consumer level car enthusiast. I am trying to show this product in it's true form, this is why I quickly cleaned a extra dirty rim. I purposefully only brought 2 wheel brushes (I should have just brought the big fender brush). Most people don't have the EZ detail brush, or swissvax wheel brushes or the like. I wanted to show what kinds of results you could expect from an entry level person. Another thing, when I agitated the wheels, I went over them quickly, most of these people do not know the techniques, or how to get a close to perfect rim the first round. I gave both sides an even and equal treatment.

Cleaning Power:
These are both fun products to watch, as they both change colors when coming in contact with iron, brake dust, and other elements. The sonax did seem to have a slight edge especially in the no-touch department. In the first cleaning test, you can see where the sonax really pulls through. As time goes on the sonax becomes more apparent, where as the griots slowly fades away.

With agitation I see these products very similar, the sonax MAY have had an edge, but that's probably because I missed some spots on both sides, and the sonax probably helped where I didn't reach.

There was no advantage on either product when you really pay attention. They both cleaned the wheel equally on the last pass.

Foaming:
I love how the GGHDWC foams. I know foaming doesn't have a direct link to cleaning capability, but it definitely helps to move the product around in different areas, plus it gives you that working feeling. The sonax obviously shows that it works, but when you agitate it, you feel like you are swishing around goop. I know that shouldn't really matter to me, but it kind of does.

Smell:
I would much rather work with the Griots over the Sonax because of this reason. The Sonax smell isn't strong, but it is displeasing.

Ease of Use:
Both products are qually easy to use IMO. The directions are similar on both;
Rinse
Spray & let sit for about 3 mins
Agitate needed areas
Rinse clean

Final Thoughts:
The sonax is going to have a cleaning edge as you can see, but is it a $50 (price comparison 1gal price) cleaning edge? I would argue, no. I don't think there is a set of wheels out there, that if I was going to use either of these products, would not need to be agitated. And if they were lightly dirty to where I wouldn't need to agitate I would probably just use a bucket of soap and water. With this being said, I see the Griots being much more cost effective, and the product I will probably be using. (But I still have about 2 gallons of Sonax to finish up)

Thanks for the review:dblthumb2:
Haven't used Griot's yet but have plenty Sonax

Love the ghosts n stuff:xyxthumbs:

nice review-cool video-if you want send the sonax to iowa

Great review. You really need to get a Swissvax or Raceglaze wheel brush for the face of the wheel and for the insides of the spokes and lug holes.

So as I said in this comparison and the griots only review thread, this was more of a consumer based comparison. I tried to take the steps and products that more of a beginner would use. I am going to try to do something similar but more from a detailers perspective using specialized brushes, taking time to get in grooves, etc.

Mike, awesome review and video!! :props: Thanks for taking the time to do this. :dblthumb2:
I definitely saw the difference that Sonax was a better cleaning product but I completely agree that agitation is a must regardless which as you said makes the advantage a moot point. At the price difference I too will make Griots my next wheel cleaner purchase.

You beat me to it Ron. As I was watching the video I was thinking the exact same thing! Mike, you must get one for in that lip and those corners as well as the lugs. Not that you have to have it but you will love it.

If you do that will be awesome as well. Everything you already provided is greatly appreciated. Thank you

I do have the swissvax brush, and boars hair wheel brush. This first round, I really thought I wanted to show what kind of power the cleaners had. I thought, what would I be showing if I sat down and spent 5-10 mins on each wheel? So I found a dirty wheel, and just went over it quickly with a couple of brushes, but seeing as I am a member of this site, that really isn't like me. So I will go back, find another dirty rim, and knock it out with some better brushes, and actually pay attention to what areas are still dirty. I am probably going to pick up the daytona speed brush as well since I hear it is a little more geared for wheels.

Mike very nice job, I know these take some time to do so we really appreciate your contributions to the forum.

:iagree: John and I can split it Im the MAN

Anyway, Mike great review, and really high production quality on that video! What all did you use to edit it?

I saw some of the same things as the others; it really looked like the Sonax won the 'no touch' cleaning, and had a lot more longevity compared to the GG, however, the foaming on the GG was great. You found some nasty wheels to work on!

Lately I have only been using OPC/APC+ to clean wheels, but I have been working with relatively clean cars that I regularly maintain. If I ever start getting into some neglected wheels, I will give the GG a shot.

Thanks for the review,

'11 version. But there really isn't much more from the '09

You already have a EZ brush..the Daytona is not that much better except it has a stiffer metal rod.

Very nice review Mike!!! Thanks for taking time to do this.

I can clearly see that Sonax has a stronger cleaning ability compare to the Griot's. Also, the color changing effect of the Griot's is weaker compared to the Sonax. You also used the Sonax with the wheel rinsed first. I think Sonax recommends using it on a dry wheel so it might even have more strength when you do that.

Nice video BTW! I love the music!

Nice review. I also think that agitation is a must for insuring effective cleaning on all surfaces. I also think it tends to reduce the amount of cleaner needed since end up spreading as you agitate.

On the next set of wheels, I will try to do one wheel each, and sonax will get a dry wheel.
