One of my long time friends and customers just bought a 2016 jeep wrangler Rubicon 4 door. Black on black, leather, heated seats, all the bells and whistles.

He brought it over a couple hours after he bought it, and we decided to polish out the minor swirls and marring from the dealer, and coat it in Wolfgang uber ceramic, including the wheels. Fast forward to Saturday morning( a week after he bought it). I gave it a thorough wash to prep it for clay and polish, then coating.

While I was drying it, I noticed that you can see white around every single hinge plate on the four doors. Upon closer inspection, there were spots behind the hinge barrels on the body that had the primer/sealer showing. The top of the inside of the tailgate was splotchy all the way across due to insufficient paint coverage.

I called my customer, and told him that he needed to come see what I was seeing. He did, and was furious. $48k, and they couldn't even get paint on the whole thing.

I told him if he was going back to the dealer, we should wait to do anything else, until he deals with them. He agreed, and though I told him the wash job was on the house, he insisted on tipping me generously for my time.

He will be bringing it back when this is resolved.

I just felt horrible to be the one to tell him his dream rig had a darkside, but I feel it is part of my job to see what others don't, and inform my customers of potential problems.

Terrible situation. Part of being a good Detailer like you is getting the unpleasantries out and up front and feeling bad having to break the news.
It shows you care.

I had to show a potential customer a section on his (new to him) corvette, a small section near the bottom of the rocker panel that hadn't been wet sanded. A section of the car must have been sprayed but not sanded. He didn't know it until I showed it too him. I felt terrible pointing it out.

But one, I'd rather he knew before I worked on the car than after, and it showed him I care about his car and look at the details.

Folks should hire a Detailer to go with them to buy a car. Between our keen eyes, flex lights and paint measurement tools, we can add value to a car purchase for our customers.

At the least the Jeep is covered by new car warranty. Personally, I see all manufacturer's new vehicle quality/reliabilty slipping downward no matter what JD Powers writes. Its not an American or Asian or European related phenomenum. Just look at all the recent recalls.

you have a good eye, now he is going to trust you even more to take care of his vehicle(s)....

It's not too uncommon to have to tell people their brand new vehicle has had an area repaired/repainted. Never fun to do, but they typically appreciate the attention to detail and honesty.
