The other thread is very long and there is a lot of stuff to sift through, so to find the best and simplest instructions for the the grease Mod look here http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum.../55905-harbor-freight-da-polisher-new-46.html

THIS TOTAL COST WAS 7 BUCKS (I had everything else)

We all know the stock cord on mys of these units is not very long. There have been others who have modded it. I did mine today and documented it. Ill keep it as short and sweet as possible.

Tools used:

L to R Electrical tape, Exacto blade, #2 magnetic (it nice to have) Phillips, Lineman's pliers (any wire cutter will do), Wire stripper. (any way you can clean off insulation is fine)

20Ft cord form Dollar General.

Cut off Female end

Now to go to the DA. Remove screw at back and seperate from unit.

Remove wire end screws :

Get an approx amount of wire you will need

Now you need to peel back the orange cord insulation and Seeing as how the DA is a two wire system, I snipped back the ground wire.

At this point, DO NOT FORGET TO PUT CORD THROUGH THE HANDLE (THIS WILL BITE YOU IN THE BUTT EVERY TIME!)

I did not have the correct clips on my tool bin so I just utilized the stock ones by splicing it "Old School" :) This is where your Strippers and electrical tape come in to play.

I did not document all the trial and error but you will have to play with getting the correct length on each end. it can be a pain but you will get it. note that I put tape around the splice after the twist. bend it against the thicker wire and tape down .

once black and white wires are fastened back in place, attach clamp. remember to alternate between each screw while tightening.

If your having trouble getting the cover back on,, check the speed knob. You may have to lift it up a little to go over the case slot.

Hope this helps everyone!

Good write up!

That will help A LOT of folks.

Thanks for the nice write up!! For those who don't want to go through this mod Home Depot has a 12' extension cord for $7.99 that has a two way female end so it's not large like the 3 way ends--so I just taped it to the 10' cord on my GG DA for a permanent solution.

Would a 14/3 cord fit through the strain relief & clamp?

If the proper horse shoe type connectors weren't available, I would have soldered & shrink tubed (adhesive lined) the splice, but I'm admittedly anal about wiring....

LOLOL Its cool. didnt feel like soder and going to hardware store. I have been using E tape for years. with the clamp its no big deal to me. Also this was for the guy who doesnt have all the good stuff to do it safe.

Nice little tutorial, I may do that to a few of my polishers.

Found a great 2 way black cord at a small hardware store that was very soft and flexible and was planning on replacing the 10' cord on my GG DA. Contacted Griots just to make sure it was OK and they informed me that it might void the warranty on the polisher so be carefull if you have a GG DA.

Just finished this mod. I used ring connectors instead of horseshoe and they required a little filing so that they would seat properly. No big deal. Used an outdoor Prime 25', 16/3 extension cord. Nice mod and thanks for the great write up as well as the other instructions you've PM'd all around. I'm very happy with the HF DA with all the tweaks....

While searching for the HF grease mod I came across this one. Thanks.

I plan on doing something similar to this with my Rupes. Love the polisher, hate the cord.

Sorry to bump an older thread.. but a question to all who have modded ANY DA Polisher to extend the cord.

What is an advantage of permanently attaching a longer cord versus using a quality extension cord each time? Is it not safe to use an extension cord to plug the DA Polisher into then plug the other end of the extension cord into an outlet?

To me it would make more sense to have an extension cord separate instead of having a 20-30 foot cord attached to the DA Polisher itself all the time and having it hang and what not. Maybe my thought is wrong.
