I have a '94 Cadillac & '02 Trans Am. Are the clear coats on both cars considered hard? Blackfire claims the hard clear coats didn't start untill '05 while others claim much before that. I'm new to machine polishing & am trying to decide what Porter Cable 7424 kit to buy. Only the caddy needs minor paint correction.

Get some light cutting compound and do a small test area. If the color of the paint gets on your pad, there's no clear coat and is single stage paint.

The way to determine if your clear coat is hard is to perform a test spot. Doing this will allow you to find out how hard it is to remove the swirls in your paint. Blackfire was saying 2005 was when cars with ceramic clear coats started showing up on the streets.

I would piece together your own kit as some kits aren't as complete as I would make them.

Start off with the PC 7424XP. Add a 5" Dual Action backing plate and an assortment of Lake Country 5.5" Flat pads. 1 yellow, 2 orange, 2 white, and two black pads is a great start.

Get the SRC Compound and Polish to pair with certain pads that will give you swirl free results. And if you want to stick with Blackfire, put down a layer of Wet Diamond All Finish Paint Protection and to add a great shine top with Midnight Sun.

Quality shampoo, wash mitt, drying towels, clay bar, and microfiber towels will ensure that you get the best prep for the swirl removal process!
