So I’m thinking of marketing with EVERY DOOR DIRECT MAIL.

What are your thoughts? Good idea? Bad idea?

Success stories are welcomed.

Thanks!

I would say pick one up, call five or six places that are running ads now and ask to talk to the owner. Pick businesses that are similar to yours, stuff that is more of a luxury type item, not a necessity, priced similarly. You don't want to call the guy that builds pools or puts up patio awnings. Carpet cleaning, crown molding installers, stuff like that. Ask them if they feel like they're getting good value. Also, avoid falling into the trap that the advertising has to bring your 5x your investment back. We're in the business of building relationships with people. Hopefully, long term relationships. I don't care if the advertising barely pays for itself, if I'm looking to add CUSTOMERS to my base, you're essentially paying for leads that are already buying.

The only thing I will add to this is that you need to realize that these customers are coupon shoppers. Maybe you turn them into regulars. Maybe a few. But ultimately most of them are going to only respond to "deals." Maybe you can keep track of them separately and target them in the future with deals to get them to pick up the phone again. I've found that coupon shoppers are hard to turn into regular customers. Not impossible, but hard.

How much something costs is mostly irrelevant to this discussion. It might be $75 and it seems like a deal, until he tells you that he lives in a town of 15,000 people. I pay $325 quarterly to advertise direct mail to 200k homes, mostly upscale. I actually pay twice that because I run the same ad in two different magazine that are delivered to two neighboring communities of about 200k each. One does quite well, the other maybe barely pays for itself. I won't reup when the time comes (one more ad to pay for and run), I'll invest half of what I spend monthly ($220ish) into more Google AdWords because that is the one thing I know for sure works. And I might not even do that because as it is we're so busy that I'm afraid if I add more advertising I'll be paying to get the phone to ring only to tell people that I don't have any availability for 10 days. That may work for some people where they're the only game in town, it doesn't work in SoCal.

Read what I wrote again. Your curiosity is not relevant to the discussion. ;)

Ok mr. bigshot. I guess you’re in charge of what people can and can’t ask tonight? Btw I wasn’t asking you, I was asking the OP. Take it easy...

How much would that cost?

I know a territory can run about $150-$200 depending on where you blast the mail.

In terms of printing, $500 for 1000. I still need to talk to a rep, but it may also include mailing out too.

also speak to your local post office they offer a very similart service and price by area as well and last time i looked into it the prices were very low for the area i was gonna target.

is hit and miss , is a bit pricey , but here are a few points you have to look for :
- good looking design
- an "deal"
- time limit
- look towards multiple cars deal
- colorful
- eye catch over all

i run a few of this , some did well, some didn`t . but it gives you access to hi end communities that are gated....
usually if you cover your expenses , will take couple months , people don`t call right away....
