is it possible to use 3m compound on plastic headlights and a scotchbright pad and just use carwax to get the finish back? or should i go with that lense restore kit? i'm asking because i dont need a restoration, but there's a clear dried filmy substance on my headlightss and it looks like hell. im not sure if the headlights have clearcoat coating on them, maybe thats it. i dunno. i want to avoid sandpaper as much as possible because ive never had luck using sandpaper by any means. i do have an electric mouse with scotchbright pads. unless there's someone in the ct area that can help me out, i can pay cash. its just 1 light. any help would be appreciated.
 
Yes, you could... but then you would not have any protection from re-hazing (oxidation).
IMO, the scotchbrite is the abrasive. If using too harsh of a scotch bright, you most certainly will have an issue that the compound alone can't handle.

Seems that the least aggressive method coupled with the right tool for the job would dictate the kit. I have used the 3M Lens Renewal Kit (otc) on a dozen or so pair of headlights. You can skip the sanding process and use the supplied trizact foam first; if you want to go least aggressive first,on a test spot.


I have also used the Mothers Powerbal 4Lights Headlight Restoration Kit (gifted from Forest) also with success. This kit utilizes a plastic polish for clarification, protection, and maintenance.
If you follow the directions carefully, you should not experience problems.

Some 3000 grit sand paper and Then a polish will most likely remove the film. But it will leave no protection on them. Headlights come with a UV protectant on them. Once you remove it they will yellow and haze much faster.

There are a few detailers in CT, I myself am in MA. Where are you in CT and I can probably send you a couple of names to call if your unsure how to fix them yourself.
 
You don't need the kit. Just sand, compound, and then polish with the same products we use on paint. Then coat them yearly or seal them monthly.

Might be the reason no one responded for almost 24 hours.
 
Even using 105 on a foam pad will greatly help the issue if you don't want to touch sandpaper.

im in naugatuck, connecticut. i would greatly appreciate it. i know there's 1 place in my town but they're all punks, i dont trust them.
