Headliner Replacement

Looking to gather opinions on this.

My headliner is coming off more or less in my 03 mazda6.

If I were to get it redone I read mobile detailers often do it for about 50 - 100 bucks.

Or would you guys suggest taking it to a shop (not the dealer obviously rip off there)

I would rather use a mobile service. That way ever few minutes I could go out and act like I was looking for something and check how everything was progressing

That is super cheap. Some cars are much more work than others; I have no idea about the mazda 6. If I could get mine done for that in my e36 bmw I would in a second.
 
I'd take it to either a local trim shop or a body shop. Much cheaper labor rates.

Consider this: You'll probably need a whole new replacment headliner if your's is failing/falling. Why? Because the backing material of the exisiting board(the part the fabric glues to) is probably failing/rotting which means you can't reattach it as it most likely will not hold.
 
2003 Mazda 6 Headliner:
(w/sunroof) = $398.78 +1.8 labor hours
(w/o sunroof) = = $435.22 + 1.8 labor hours

Damn, those prices are super high. Glad I don't live in Miami :p

I had a new headliner put in a crew cab super duty for $125 last year. The cardboard backing was not rotted out though

Another reason I like mobile is you'll save on overhead
 
Take it to an upholstery shop,i had my daughters Nissan Sentra done for $175.00 and it came out awesome.
 
High? The part price and the labor time to install it comes from the manufacturer and is the same throughout the country. What fluctuates is the labor rate. Ours is $40/hour.

$125 is definately a good price for a recover as long as your board and insulation is ok. Otherwise it requires replacment. Trouble with being in FL is that the heat destroys them unlike your guys up north.
 
excluding cars with the bow and stitched head liners seen in pre 1980 cars and trucks, I have not seen a head liner require more than 1 & 1/2 hours to complete.

the material for 95% of auto's today WITH a mark-up will be around $60 per yard.

I dont understand the cost estimate for the $400 quotes.

I replaced the headliner myself last year in my '04 Mazda 6. You might consider doing the job yourself as it's not that difficult; just take your time. There are several online distributors that can provide you with the the headliner material. It's basically a foam-backed material that you glue directly to the bare headliner board, once you've removed all of the old liner. The headliner board in these cars are made out of a fiber-like material and is very strong. Scrape all of the old liner and insulation off, once you have the headliner out of the car. Then lay the new material down over the headliner board and fold it back at about the middle of the headliner. Spray a headliner-specific glue on the headliner board and on the material itself a little at a time, and allow both to become tacky. Then roll the material over the headliner board to connect the glued areas together. Then keep moving down until you're finished. Just be sure you buy an adhesive that is made specifically for LIGHT WEIGHT headliner material. Here's a link that I thought was useful as it is specific to the 2003 Mazda 6. It just doesn't have a sunroof.
