Heat gun / hair dryer to remove bird poop etchings?

There are several Youtube videos demonstrating removal of bird poop etchings using a heat gun or hair dryer. Is this method safe and effective?

When you heat the clear coat, it swells up and hides some defects. Once it cools down the defects are all back. Don’t believe everything you see on the internet.
The only way to address etching is by abrading the surface in order to level it again.

Thanks. Some implied the clearcoat would re-flow in order to "heal" (my term). Too good to be true I guess.
