Heavy Duty Extension Cord?

I've noticed alot of posts suggesting using a 12 gauge extension for
polishers. Is this necessary for something that comes standard with
a 16 gauge power cord?

The gauge is dependent on two factors: length of the cord and draw of the items at the end. While your appliance may have a 16AWG cord, that is for plugging directly into the outlet which typically is serviced by 12AWG wire.

For your appliance, I would use no less than 14AWG for runs up to 50 feet. If you plug several things into a multi-plug at the end of the run, such as a 500W light and a polisher, spend a couple extra dollars and use 12AWG.

I have an assortment of extension cords from 16AWG to 12AWG (mostly 25 feet).

The 16 Guage cord was desined for the length of the Cord to the plug and is usually okay for appliances with a 15' Cord or less.

Go 50' or above and I try to go 12 guage or bigger.

Hint. If any of the cord is getting warm or hot you have a resistence issue due to guage !

Personally I use a 10 ga. contractor grade cord by Rigid. When mobile I sometimes have to span a long way, and having to worry about not only a polisher but a steamer & extractor I had to go heavy. Awesome cords though, and the price between 12 and 10 ga. wasn't all that big.
