I've been detailing as a hobby since 1987 when I bought my first buffer. A GEM orbital buffer. I have lots of others now, but she is still my go to. I don't do sides with her anymore! Damn good workout if you can.
I did get paid to detail back then in my school days. I put an ad in the local penny pincher weekly newspaper to advertise. I usually had 2-3 cars a weekend. Nice extra money.
I am in IT. When the web came out, I did have the idea to make a website, called 'Glaze Man Detailing' to offer auto cleaning, waxing, polishing products, tools and know-how. I did not follow through with that thought. When I first saw autogeek.net, I thought, damn, someone did it. I am super glad they are doing well. I have spent a lot of time reading the material posted and learning all about the latest and greatest products over the years.
I now have 5 vehicles that are mine that I keep up with as well as my Mom and Sisters cars. My cars are great to me, but not over the top show winners. I have a 2016 Mustang GT, dark grey, 1966 Mustang, red, 1996 Dodge Ram 1500, red and never washed or waxed, 2014 dark red Fusion my wife drives and a 2005 Ford Focus, red. I feel in love with that focus when it was my daily driver. Great car. I am hoping to make a sport touring race car out of her eventually.
I do love to detail as a hobby. It relaxes me. Out in the garage, turn music on, maybe a beer or two and detail away.
For a long time, I specifically used a small northeast Philadelphia vendor. 'Ardex''' for my waxing needs. Each spring, I could easily get a bunch of guys from work to go in on a bulk order that Ardex would deliver to me. They made great product. Still do? Maybe. Much better than what was on the shelves at the local stores. I still swear by their Flint Glaze product. I would put that on as a final step... Wow what a deep, clear shine it produced. That's where the Glaze in Glaze Man originally came from.
I did talk to Ardex years ago about marketing their product on the web. The owner would not hear it. Had no interest. I see now that someone is doing that. I stopped using their product at that time and found other product on the web.
I'm always interested in the next product. I do test them on my focus or wife's car before my Mustangs! I'm looking forward to reading everyone's thought on detailing here. Should be interesting for sure.
Take care all!
