Basically, I finally bought a car that I feel I should take better care of. Not that I didn't take care of my previous cars, but this one is black, and I know it needs constant attention so it looks at least presentable.

New car: 2013 Acura RDX, black exterior / tan interior

So what happened the day after I picked up the new car? 4 inches of snow, and the roads covered with salt. Hello new car!

My previous ride was a 2005 Saab 9-2x Aero in dark Silver. Basically a Saabaru. Fun car, but purchased at a time in my life when I had other hobbies.

I still have those hobbies, but with a more expensive car, I feel like I'd enjoy keeping it looking great.

I've done a ton of reading so far, and and amazed at how much there is to know and the fantastic amount of knowledge there is here. I'm also amazed at the similarities between methods for finishing my woodworking projects (another hobby) and properly maintaining the finish on a car.

Basically, it seems like the name of the game is surface preparation, suface preparation and more surface preparation. Add in some patience, diligence, pride, and some product knowledge and you might have something to start with. At least that is my impression so far.

Welcome! My sister lives in Rochester. Love your choice in your new car!

Welcome! I was born and raised an hour away from you in Geneva on Seneca Lake, right in the center of the Finger Lakes. Needless to say, I know quite well about the snow and salt and the kind of weather you must face each year. In fact, although I now live in Texas, I get up there several times a year since I have relatives living in Fairport and Brighton. Plus, I've got a bunch of childhood friends who live throughout the region. I still own hunting acreage near Dundee and each November I go up to hunt deer there. Sometimes, as you well know, even November weather can be nasty and tough.

To make sure I did not have to contend with all that when I retired in 1995, I decided Texas would be my home - no snow, no salt or sand and I can detail my car (and golf!) year round. Despite the hot summers, this was the best move I ever made. And I won't even begin to talk about the difference in NY tax and overall cost of living compared to the no income tax state of Texas.

I am saying all this to give you a suggestion. My suggestion to you is not to try to fight it because it is a lost cause; you will never win. You will never be happy detailing cars in that kind of weather up there, nor will you be able to keep your ride pretty and proud no matter what you do. Take the advice of someone who knows - if you truly love your car and detailing get out of that place and move somewhere south as fast as you can!!

Welcome to AG, you've read good things, its all about prep and then you can layer and layer (washing/quick detailing inbetween) with many choices for LSP's!

I used to live in Rochester for 30 years. You can keep the snow and salt up there, thank you.

I'm now near Atlanta in the sunbelt. Never going back up north.

Good luck trying to keep that car clean and rust free.
