I’m an old (66 Years) newbie. I’m looking forward to learning how to properly detail my vehicles. I own a 2012 Dodge charger, 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis, and a 2000 Chevy Trailblazer. I thought I knew how to clean and wax my vehicles but after viewing the video’s on the web site I’ve learned I don’t know Jack. I just retired and am looking for something to keep me busy and this will be one idea. I’m anxious to learn new ideas about how to detail my vehicles. I’ll just be a lurker until you guys and gals educate me. I just bought a PC-7424XP-VK - Porter Cable 7424xp Value Kit so any tips are more than welcome. I am on a budget so any ideas on how to save money are appreciated. My name is Dave.

Welcome aboard. Dont just lurk ask questions. That's only way you gonna get answers you need/want.

Hi Dave - I used to live in Southgate for a short period of time, welcome to the forum. Like StephenK said, jump in, ask questions. This is an awesome forum, very friendly and with a ton of great experience with tips/advice for any type of budget.

Welcome another mid-west neighbor! Congrats on retirement and hopefully you enjoy the new found hobby. This is a great place and Jack will soon become your best friend as you'll get to know him well ;)

If you're able, any pics of the vehicles from afar and perhaps close up showing the condition of the paint will go a long way in determining things down the road. Also, share with us your goals initially and long term and I'm sure everyone will jump in.

Hey Dave,

I'm up in Rochester Hills / Shelby Twp. If you ever need anything!

About a month ago I drove down there to pick up another PC off Craigslist...

Dan.

Both cars are kept outside. I have a 1980 Ford F100 Stepside in the garage I plan on restoring. I'm looking forward for warmer weather to start detailing them. What is the best temp to start? We're suppose to get snow tomorrow.

Awesome start to your collection of gear!

Looks like a really good start. Really like the R/T too. I'll await a fellow Columbus guy Parshooter to chime in as he has your twin. Given it's black, you're no longer retired. Keeping a black car nice is a job of its own. Welcome to the club!

Insight on the above would be to pick up a couple more Orange Pads. On the R/T you'll be best to use about 5-6 total switching them out accordingly. You could take a break and wash them though. My rule on blue and black wax/sealant pads is to keep at least 2 just in case you drop or soil one by accident while working. Just a thought.

On the R/T if the paint is just swirled, the M205 will do nicely on a white pad. There too if you go that route, perhaps 5 total for the RT. I will add that I recently fell in love with a hybrid glaze for my black vehicles. Chemical Guys Blacklite worked amazing on my car and I can't wait to wash the wife's van and put a couple coats on it. Put it on after your polish but before your sealant and you'll fall in love. See here for a shot I posted earlier: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...-today-detailing-related-923.html#post1354174

Lastly, pick up some good 480gsm Korean edgeless Microfiber towels. They are very plush and work great. I pick them up for just over $20 for a 10 pack. PM me and I'll send you the link. I do a lot of rinseless washes and use orange for washing and keep a set pf blue for polishing / waxing.

Great start and glad to see you picked up some quality products. Let the fun begin!

It's too late to edit the post so I need to reply that I should have said $20 for a pack of 5. I buy them 2 at a time and was mistaken when pulling up my past orders. My apologies.

Welcome Dave. My name is Dave also. There sure are a lot of Dave's on here. Maybe because guys named Dave like clean cars.

Re: Awesome start to your collection of gear!

Thanks for the info. I just purchased 2 packs of five.

Welcome. I'm from Woodhaven just down the road from you but now in Tampa.
