Help installing backing plate on Porter Cable 7424

See my attached pic. I am trying to install a new backing plate and this silver piece is in the way. Can someone explain how I remove it? Thanks!
 
Looks like someone put some type of home made extension on it that is stuck. It should unscrew. That thing sticking out is not part of the PC.
 
Eyeball some of Mike Phillips' Articles about the PC 7424, and backing plates, and there you will be able to see how the PC Machine looks with backing plate off. You'll need the Backing Plate wrench, and perhaps a pair of Pliers, or Vice Grips to remove that extension to then permit a Backing Plate to be mounted up.

Standard right hand threads are used.

Remove that adapter just as you would the backing plate. That is an edge 2000 adapter.
