::edit, the subject should say tire *cleaner* on ALL my trim ::edit

Guys, gals, I goofed in the dumbest way.

I was on temporary duty after buying a new (to me) 2016 Mazda, and wanted to keep it washed/clean while there. Couldn't really have much delivered so I was making a few trips here and there to the local big box store to get various cleaning supplies. One trip was specifically to get something for my trim (LOADS of it on this CX5!). I went back and forth between a few products on the shelf, I picked up this West Coast Customs Tire and Trim shine. I put it back. Looked over some others. Finally I turned back around and grabbed *what I thought* was *Tire and Trim Shine*, but actually grabbed (it was stocked right beside it!!) their *Wheel and Tire Cleaner*. I'm such a bonehead. The bottles looked identical!

Anyway I applied it over ALL the trim. I immediately noticed the B-pillar trim was "sticky" to wipe down. Now, 3+ weeks later, I'm still seeing affects. When it's hot + humid, it almost appears that the B-pillar (especially) trim is "sweating". It looks wet, and shiny, but in a spotty way. Took a few pics after coming home on a humid day.

I've tried: 303 Int/Ext cleaner/protectant, Griot's Interior Cleaner, CG's Nonsense Colorless & Odorless All Surface Cleaner.

None of the other trim seems to be as badly affected. Ironically I have a bottle of C4 trim from another car that I never used and planned to use on this one.

So question is, what can I do to stop what I can only assume it leeching of the plasticizers? Does it really need to be cleaned, or should I just be focusing on protecting it? Just don't want to waste the C4.

Also I can NOT get the overspray off my windows - any suggestions? Haven't tried clay, but it seems like it might have to be razored off??

Thanks, and excuse the detailing fopa!

25% rubbing alcohol/75% distilled water in a spray bottle.......

The black trim on those pillars is usually a type of vinyl wrap. The metal underneath should be painted and cleared coated. I removed it for someone a few months ago. It was a mustang that had that vinyl slashed by someone leaving big cuts. Luckily the paint underneath was okay and it looked pretty good after the adhesive was removed and a polishing.

So it is different than your other trim. Sounds like you certainly have cleaned it well since the wheel cleaner. So it the wheel cleaner should be removed by now.

You may have to wait until it stops the sweating thing. Then something like Solutions Finish to give it the deep black coloring again. You could apply the C4 on top of the Solutions Finish, but it is something I am starting to shy away from. I am finding that when it comes down to the time when the affect Solution Finish had on the coloring starts to fade and needs reapplying (about 1.5 - 2 years with C4 or DLUX coating trim) that the subsequent applications of Solutions Finish will not coat and color as uniformly. I assume that it is due to not really being able to remove all traces of the old C4 or DLUX and it preventing the absorption of the Solution Finish.

Therefore I know top Solution Finish treated trim with something like the M37 Plastic Restorer, WETS, UTTG, AF Revive or SONAX Plastic Restorer.

If the alcohol solution (IPA) doesn’t work I would step up to a mild solution of Meguires APC. Remember to wipedown the surface with a damp microfiber to remove the remaining APC.

Not all door pillars are made of the same material so not every solution will work equally. The black pillars on my BMW are painted metal. I just polish mine with a fine abrasive to remove scratches and then apply a coat of sealant, wax or whatever LSP I am using on the rest of the car.

Very true. I have the glossy black piano type plastic on my own car. That photo looks like the textured vinyl wrap though. That you would not polish with an abrasive.
