Ok, my other challenge is this; my son spun out his Honda Civic into an orchard and a fence. We have finally fixed all of the car!! All that is left is painting, as the trees damaged like every possible panel. Given I had bought the vette two weeks prior to this, and we have already spent 3k or so to get it back to good, we need to prep and paint it. I now my husband knows a little about it, but we could definitely use some advice, especially on how to avoid what he calls "tiger stripes".... Thoughts? Many thanks. Lauren Feed back please :)

honestly, prep it out and have it professionally sprayed, and if you want you can wetsand it and polish it after it is sprayed.do lots and lots and lots of research on it, or you will likely get a lot of defects in the paint. best i can say other than that is to remove each panel and do one at a time instead of the entire car at once.

I think we may do a panel at a time. Is it necessary to remove them all again? Or just to cover the car appropriately? Thank u for your help. - Lauren

i would... its not all that tough, just loosen the bolts and everything and pull the panels and just do them one at a time, it will be easier and look better in the end i think. lets you focus on getting the small stuff done so the big picture looks better in the end.my brother has painted a few cars so thats where im coming from with this. if he wants to do it himself i suggest either spending a few days online or going and getting a book about painting and reading it.

Yes, I agree. Reading up would be a wise idea. Thank you for sharing! If you think of anything else, let me know!

Tiger stripes ??? You mean fisheyes (waves in paint from silicone usually) or orange peel (uneven paint and clearcoats) ?? If either, cost will likely reduce them as lots of buffing and wet-sanding.

Another low cost idea, allow a local high-school or trade-school to paint it for free. They need the experience and will redo it many times if needed.

If you want to avoid your so called tiger stripes which are really paint streaks , make sure the upper gun spray adjustment screw pattern above the hand grip on your spray gun is in a good fan position........practice, practice ,practice on a piece of sheet metal....;) Also your paint fluid adjustment screw just below the pattern adjustment screw should be ajusted to appox 2 1/2 turns outward from a closed position.......

luck to you...........:)

Ditto!

Honestly call around and find out if there are any car classes need to paint.

If I were you, pay once to have it all done right. Find a bodyshop who knows what they are doing, and get a quote from the dealership as well. Honestly somethings are worth the money and a paintjob IS one to leave to the pros.

great idea..............

Thank you so much everyone.:grouphug: :applause:
I will share this with my husband. I
wanted a pro paint job but no Earl Shieb style crap. Unfortunately, sinking 3k into it is more than its worth (in addition to the amount spent already!!!) I could see if one of our high schools does - great idea. I work at a high school, but there they do not do painting... But there are a lot of others.
GREAT suggestions! Thanks... if you think of anything else..we just want it to look decent outside...
