Well guys I guess this was inevitable, like duh. ;) It has been pointed out to me by both friends as well as our Tax Accountant that it’d be a really good idea to go ahead and start an “official” detailing business. With all I've spent in the last few months it is a no brainer to show it as business expenses. After all, who in the world spends that much on a hobby? Ruh-Row.... that'd be probably most of us here!

Been toying with names and thought I’d throw it out there to the “collective”.
FWIW I’ve seen this article, doesn’t really say anything I don’t already know.

The rules are simple; Not interested in using our personal names as I cannot have my name on, being disabled. Probably not the name of the city as the only other ones are the "tunnel of doom" type carwashes and I don't want to be associated with them AT ALL.

Might, just MAYBE be open to something related to “peach” or “peach state” but that’s so overdone here. Heck, you should see how many roads have "peachtree" in Atlanta! (Something like 67 or so I think.) And honestly, we are not in Atlanta and don’t want to have anything to do with it!

Anything else is fair game. Stuff like shine, fine, perfect, perfection, gloss, glass, reflection, premier, protection, finish, mirror, smooth, buff, paint, detail (or detailing), auto, bright (brite)….
Ha' there it is, Premier Perfection Absolute Auto Reflection Protection or PPAARP for short.... Then again, I'm in the AARP age group. ;)

I dunno, just something that sounds like some time was spent on it.
So “collective” (as in Star Trek the Borg) ;) what say you?

I'm not going to throw out actual name suggestions to you until you have some contenders nailed down, but I will make a couple of suggestions:

1. Make the name something people can see an image of in their mind "Perfect Image Detailing"

2. Perception is reality, so your name is not only going to be what you operate your business under, but the first and sometimes only impression your prospective customers are going to have of you. It should say that you are professional, and are going to provide and excellent service to them.

3. Stay away from generic names "Excellence Detailing" "Whatever your town name is Detailing"

This is a huge decision, a crappy name can be difficult to overcome. I spent literally weeks thinking of my name, and when I heard it the first time instantly knew it was "it".

4. You should love your name, and so should potential clients. Run it by family, friends, forum members to get feedback. Make sure it has wide appeal and not just to you.

Hope this helps!

What's something you want to be associated with? Like a certain aspect of your detailing expertise that you really shine at and would like to be known for.
"Reflective Aspects Detailing"
And its abbreviation is RAD! And, your welcome.LOL
Kinda catchy if I say so myself. If you don't use it I think I have a new business name.;)

Thanks Mark, I agree! (fwiw I mentioned you in a thread yesterday... diggin' on your mobile rig.) ;)

As if it's any help, my home theater business reflected the clientele I was aiming for; Premier Audio Video - High End Home Theater. Worked with clients looking for a custom solution, typically dedicated theaters. Kept me from having to deal so much with interior decorators, (the nightmare of ANY guy that wants good sound)!

Didn't bother with the BOSE crowd either, there is an old saying in audio, "No highs - no lows, must be Bose!" Which is another way of saying you can get better sound for half the money everywhere you look. ;)

FWIW, my monoprice in-wall speakers sound better than my buddy's Bose and they all cost less than one of his speaker stands. If you ever get your hands inside a Bose box, look up the part number on the driver - it's a $20 driver in a $200 plastic box.

As always, YMMV...

Hmmmm Shaun, lemee think.... personal touch, one on one, white glove treatment, shine it like it's mine, along those lines.

I've been around cars my entire life (by choice). My Dad taught me to drive a 63 Econoline dry cleaning van when I was 9, 3-speed on the column. I was so short he put his box of snow chains in the seat behind me. I'd drive that van for weeks when we went the lake.

I think a lot of you that have seen my threads know I started buying and hot rodding as a teenager, then I owned a towing service for many years. Up untill the point I was forced to retire due to disability. During that time my entire world was cars. My wife still works in the industry as a title manager. So YES cars pay the bills around here. :)

Honestly (and this is to you ALL) I've known a lot of different guys from all walks of life in the detailing world. All however have had work ethic that you just don't see at the local 'cubicle' office. ;) Most of them were dealership production guys, but in my hi-line shops there were some true artists. All of which I wonder to this day would even accept what a 'modern' DA is capable of?

Getting back to what I'd like to focus on.
Being able to take the time to do the job is what I want. Don't care about pumping them in and out. I am under no delusions as to the work most people want, and certainly don't think everyone wants "paint correction". Likely not even to keep their cars as I'd keep mine. But there is room for needed services, especially in my area.

Also, it is not about money, just a fulfilling part time venture. If we can, by the end of the year, average 1 or 2 a week I'm more than fine with that. Between now and then it's about having the tools on hand to get the job done. Nothing wrong with a tax write off, nothing at all. ;)

And to be even more honest, it's going to take some freaking work from my lazy azz kid! But once he starts seeing $$$ signs he'll fall into place, plus this will allow him the time to work out, while working on his goal of being a personal trainer. That's a win-win guys. :D

Why not something like Premier Image Detailing then? Keep it with something that you know. :)

Something that helps as well is saying it out loud. I know it sounds funky but sometimes something that looks good on paper doesn't sound so good. Imagine yourself answering the phone with that business name. How would it sound to a client or prospect?

How about Falcon Detailing. "We swoop the grime away"

Monoprice! I freakin' LOVE that place! ;)

$20 driver.... pffffffttt.... more like TWO $ driver. Simple folded horn device.

Paul Klipsch did it originaly in 1946 with the Klipschorn and achieved MASSIVE spl's from a 15" driver with a horn midrange/tweeter. Puts out one of the flattest responses of anything out there in it's class and even though they stopped production for a while it is still available today custom ordered for $4500 each and honestly a great deal at that price all things considered. (Although there are plenty of plans available to build your own.) Frequency response from 33Hz~17kHz, 101 db/1watt and will put out ear splitting spl's all day long with plenty of headroom from only 50 wattts! (Theoretically speaking, it'd take 128 watts for 122db using the factor of doubling the power input for every 3db spl increase.) They are designed though to work with tube amps, even single ended 12 watt amps will drive them to very loud levels, (like over 108 db).

Still one of the most respected speakers alive! Although I've not listened to one since the 80's. :(

Yeah, I've been kicking around ideas with "Premier" in it, it's been good to me. (Well, until the economy went belly up that is.) :dunno: Even the same three letters, PAV because I've still got legacy e-mails that use those letters. Just can't come up with something related to cars or painting that starts with V. Premier Auto (automotive) Vibrance just sounds weird. Premier Auto Spa perhaps, but doesn't say anything about detailing, or what you SEE when you look at the finish. I like reflection(s) or finish or something.

Got funny tonight and checked to see if DetailDaddy was available. ;) Not in .com but it is in everything else, although I know I'm still a .com guy when I'm looking and most others are too.

I hear ya' on saying it out loud. That is something I tell people when we're talking about naming a baby. I'm like "you have to be able to stand on the back porch and yell it out at the top of your lungs, first-middle-last like the kid is in trouble and you mean it. And if it rolls off the tounge well then it's a keeper."

I've got to literally go to school on new web stuff though. Last I was on the web with premieraudiovideo (I let it go a few years back) there wasn't any such thing as "adwords", or Wordpress templates for that matter. (Remembering I started that site in 98, things were primitave back then.) ;)

Collective Perfection?

But doesn't say what it's about. What to expect. (Other than from "The Collective") ;) Yup, I am the Borg, you will be assimilated your vehicle will become a part of the Collective. Hmmmm.... window stickers that say "I have been assimilated by The Collective", BORG Detailing. :p

Cardaddys handy detail!

As Long as it isn't Handjob Detailing.

Well perhaps but that'd mean I need to talk with my VP of human resources (aka: the wife).
Nothing like a nice 'detail' to polish things off. :help::nomore:
