I was detailing a Hyundai Genesis last week and after washing and claying the car I proceeded to compound the car. I did a test spot with a 5 inch microfiber pad and Ultimate Polish but it wasn't doing anything. I then decided to go with Ultimate Compound and the microfiber pad but I noticed it was leaving a trail so I immediately stopped. I don't think I went through the clearcoat because the paint defects are still there and there's still gloss and no black paint was coming off after wiping down with a microfiber towel. I took some pictures and showed Kevin Brown and he said it seems like there's some type of sealant or coating that's still on the car. Have any of you guys experienced this before and how do I get rid of these marks?

well here is what I would do .. don't guess. If you havent already you should ask the owner of the car if they put a sealant or a ceramic coating or whatever on the car. Some of them will come off with polishing or compounding. Maybe try a foam cutting pad and not a microfiber.. makes sure that they are CLEAN...do fewer passes and lighter pressure and see if the defects come up without going through the coating. If not then... well keep going with the microfiber pad..slowly in small areas.

also I see your test spot was the entire trunk ... try starting with a smaller test spot next time :)
 
Bingo, both of these guys nailed my first thought i.e. switch out to foam in lieu of MF pad.
