Hi everyone,

I'm a detailing novice, and am one of those who really just wants to keep his own car looking the best. I've been reading these forums for a while and after an email exchange with Mike, I've decided to join the forum. I slightly misspelled the nickname I wanted to use here... so that wasn't intentional!

I tend to do my own work on my cars, at least as long as said work isn't covered under a warranty! Last year, I bought a Mercedes E550 that had come off lease. The previous driver really didn't care about the car very much as there were lots of pits from small rocks in the hood, front bumper, front windscreen, and anything else in the front of the car. The dealer resprayed the hood and bumper, but there is still work to do. The entire car was also covered pretty heavily with small scratches. Because this is my daily driver, I did a 18 or so hour detail this past summer and discovered that the tools I had were woefully inadequate.

Hopefully, this link works (the "after" picture, after that detail I did):

It's now time for another detail, and knowing how much time it takes to detail a car of this size thoroughly, I'd like to do things properly. I will start another thread in one of the "newbie" groups to ask questions and post pictures of the progress...

(Central Texas got a deep freeze this week, but it will be in the 70's by this weekend... perfect weather for detailing here!)

Welcome to AGO! You've come to the right place.

Where in centex are you located? I'm in Lorena.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm in Austin... I've had the car glass tinted due to the insane summers we get here so it's effectively a limo for my kids! LOL...

Welcome! I haven't been to while Austin in a while.

Houstonian here :)

Saw that is was suppose to be 70s in Houston and saw you post that and thought you must not be far! And welcome to auto geek

It's going to be beautiful that weekend! Before then, I have to order, receive, and use the various things I need to buy to get my car its deep shine!

If you're in San Antonio, Houston, Austin, or anywhere close - see if you can make the trip to the wash and shine!

A wash and shine is a social gathering where you park your cars in a corral and talk cars to the other owners. You bring washed/shined cars. This particular one will have a fundraiser - if you want to have your car judged, there's a donation asked for the BMW foundation (in this case) and your car will be entered into the beauty contest. Of course, unless you trailer your car in a closed trailer, there may be some work to clean up road debris when you get there.

The last wash and shine I attended was with the Mercedes club, and there was no contest, just people gathering to talk cars. I like going to these simply to be around other gearheads and to drool on other people's cars. There are also "cars and coffee" events held around the country - similar idea (gather gearheads, talk cars and drink coffee).

Thank you everyone who has welcomed me to the forum, both publicly and in PMs! This is indeed a fantastic place to meet great people and really take the art of detailing to a whole new level.

On an unrelated note, I'm also a camera geek (one of the 'senior' people on another forum) so if anyone wants lessons on photography, and are anywhere near me, drop me a note...
