I washed my car this weekend and noticed what looked like holograms in direct sunlight but when I put some meguairs final inspection on the car they seemed to disappear. A buffer has never touched this car and it looked awful before I put the detailed on there. What could've caused this?

Clear coat paints are scratch-sensitive, that is they scratch easily.

Normal washing, drying and even wiping the paint over time will instill fine hair-line scratches that show up in bright light.

The only way a car finish will stay perfect is if you park it in your garage and don't ever drive it. Other than that, if you plan on driving the car AND you want it to look great all the time you'll need to use a few products to maintain the appearance.

Also, read this article,

The difference between Rotary Buffer Swirls, Cobweb Swirls and Micro-Marring

Holograms are a very specific type of swirl pattern inflicted only by rotary buffers.

It could be what you're seeing isn't rotary buffer holograms but normal cobweb type, random scratches.

There are pictures in the above thread to help people determine the type and thus the cause of the scratches in their car's paint.

It wasn't cobwebb scratches. I did have some of those but I got rid of them with ultimate polish this spring. These scratches moved when I moved that's why I thought they were holograms but like I said a buffer has never touched the paint so I don't know.
